A British worker has died on a World Cup stadium project in Qatar.
The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy of the 2022 World Cup said the man died working on the Khalifa International Stadium on Thursday 19 January.
“The relevant authorities have been notified and the next of kin has been informed. An immediate investigation into the cause of this fatality is under way and further details will be released in due course,” the statement said.
“The Supreme Committee for Delivery & Legacy shares our deepest condolences with the family for their loss.”
The committee’s website says the 1976-built Khalifa International Stadium is being modernised by the Aspire Zone Foundation, with new arches and a canopy among the additions.
Construction News reported in 2014 that the stadium’s capacity would be increased to 40,000, and a new building would be built featuring food courts, shops, VIP lounges and a health centre.
A joint venture between local firm Midmac Contracting and Six Construct, a subsidiary of the Belgian Besix Group, is overseeing works on the stadium.
The project is understood to be worth in the region of £70m.
