EVERETT — Summer Leonard, Molly West and Julia Blair each recorded victories via pinfall as the Seagulls dispatched the Eagles 48-18 in a Wesco 3A girls dual on Thursday.
Vivian Potong, Sophia Wheeler and Itzel Ceja racked up pins for Arlington.
Only six varsity bouts were contested, as the Eagles have been beset by injuries and illness.
Everett coach Rick Iversen put off his retirement to breathe new life into the Seagulls program, and coached against his good friend and former colleague Jim Smoots, who assisted him with the Arlington boys program when Iversen took over in 2011.
“He’s so willing to stay after with us and work one-on-one with us whenever we need him too,” said West, a junior and first-year wrestler whose brother Patrick is a senior on the boys team.
West said the biggest gains made by her and other beginner wrestlers from the beginning of the season are fitness-related.
“Endurance goes hand-in-hand with speed,” she said. “In the beginning of the year I only felt like I could go hard for a minute at a time. Now I feel like I can stay out there all three rounds if I had to.”
