Buckingham Group has secured the contract to build a £37m water park in the West Midlands.

Coventry City Council handed Buckingham the deal, which is valued at £28m, ahead of four other bidders.

The new waterpark will replace the existing Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre, which the council is closing after continued losses.

The facility will house a 25 m swimming pool, a water park with slides, a 120-station gym, a climbing wall, squash courts, health suites, a dance studio and a spa.

Work is set to start on the site in spring this year, with the facility expected to be opened in the summer of 2019.

FaulknerBrowns has been appointed to design the building, while Water Technology Inc, which has worked on projects at SeaWorld and Center Parcs, has been appointed to design the pools and indoor features.
