A jump to the Class 3A level. The loss of its two best swimmers. An impactful freshman class.
Yes, there’s been a lot of new things for the Shorecrest boys swimming and diving team to deal with this season. But the Scots, who finished second at last season’s 2A state meet, continue to flourish.
“Even though we’re young, we’re starting to build a great base for the future,” Shorecrest coach Scott Kelley said. “They’ve put in a lot of hard work, and their improvement has been amazing.”
The Scots (5-2 overall) haven’t hit any state-qualifying times yet, but several swimmers have a good chance at doing so, including returning state qualifiers Aric Prieve (100 backstroke), Ryan Hallgrimson (100 backstroke) and Daniel Zevenbergen (50 freestyle and 100 freestyle).
“Last year at this time, we already had three relay state-qualifying times. (Earlier this month) at the Kentridge Invite we put our best relays forward and came up short,” Kelley said. “The times weren’t slower than last year, but the standard is so much faster. This year the district meet will be the easiest path for us to get state allocations. I can see us getting our three relay teams to state.”
