2017 will be here before we know it, but if you haven’t yet used your 2016 dental benefits, now is the time to start scheduling those last-minute appointments! After all, you don’t want your benefits to go to waste. Here are just a few reasons you shouldn’t forget to use your dental benefits before the end of the year.

Calendar-Year Dental Benefits

If you have a traditional dental insurance plan through your employer, chances are pretty good that your coverage includes two routine exams and cleanings during the calendar year (which runs January 1st through December 31st). If you fail to use these benefits, they’re gone for good! They don’t roll over into the next year.

This is also a good time to consider having any extensive dental work done, especially if you’ve already hit your annual deductible or out-of-pocket maximum. These will reset at the beginning of the new year, so having work done before December 31st could save you a lot of money.

FSA Dollars and Benefits

If you have an FSA to cover your dental expenses, you should also be aware that any unused dental care dollars from 2016 will not roll over into 2017. This is your hard-earned money you could be wasting if you fail to use those dollars, so be sure to schedule any exams, cleanings, or other dental work you may want or need before the end of the year.

Take Care of Your Oral Health!

Not only could you be losing out on insurance dollars when you fail to use your benefits by the end of the year, but you could be putting your oral health at risk, too. Remember that for optimal oral health, you should be getting your teeth professionally examined and cleaned at least twice a year, and once-a-year X-rays are highly recommended as well.
