One student suspended while New Kensington police investigate

State and local police cars were parked outside the main entrance to Valley High School when students arrived Thursday morning, one day after a rumored threat of gun violence prompted a lockdown and an ongoing investigation. "It is rumored that a student had an entry on his personal calendar that suggested that he intended to shoot up the school on Thursday," New Kensington-Arnold School District Superintendent John Pallone said in a written statement. New Kensington Police Chief Jim Klein said it was learned through word of mouth from students that a threat had been made. School district administrators contacted police, who stepped up security. "While the district will not disclose the details of the protective plan of action, there will be increased visibility of the New Kensington Police Department and the Arnold Police Department on and near district facilities, and all district buildings will be on lockdown and heightened alert," Pallone said. The student who allegedly made the threat has been suspended, pending further investigation and disciplinary action. Klein said that the student has been questioned but denies writing down a plot to “shoot up the school.” Klein also said that the device containing the student’s personal calendar has been confiscated but there is no entry regarding the alleged threat. “I found out on Xbox," said a Valley sophomore. "They said on Xbox that he made the joke but planned it for over a month now, and that made me scared.” Another student revealed similar feelings throughout the student body. "There is a lot of fear because they don’t know if it’s real or not, because this has happened before,” the student said.
