Exercise caution when climbing Tavurvur, warns division

Climbers have been urged to take extra precaution when scaling the Tavurvur volcano in Rabaul, East New Britain Province.

In a report, the Geohazards Management Division says the quiet state of the volcano will certainly lure people to climb it.

“Tavurvur remained quiet during the reporting period (Nov 1-30). Most times it was vapour-free, but occasionally it released very small volumes of thin white vapour,” states the Division.

“No glow was visible at night and no audible noises were heard.”

The GMD says Tavurvur’s risk level is currently low, but any short-term increased activity will be reported as soon as they are observed.

Climbers have also been urged to carry sufficient water, ‘to overcome hot conditions’.
