Boys basketball: Five players to watch

Carson Tuttle

Kamiak | Jr. | Guard

The 5-foot-11 Tuttle enters the season as Wesco 4A’s premier point guard after a brilliant sophomore season in which he averaged 15.7 points and 6.0 assists per game. Tuttle possesses excellent shooting range, the ability to penetrate and finish, and has outstanding court vision, evidenced by his assist numbers. With another offseason to develop and polish his game, Tuttle will be key in helping the Knights contend for a conference title.

Corey Kispert

King’s | Sr. | Guard/Forward

There’s no secret what the 6-foot-7 King’s standout can do with the ball in his hands. He’s shown throughout his decorated career an unbelievable ability to take a game over at any time with his scoring prowess.

“I saw him this summer, and he is the real deal,” Arlington coach Nick Brown said. “He’s a hard-nosed player, does everything right and can do it all.”

Before last year’s Cascade Conference MVP and Gonzaga University commit heads to Spokane next fall, he’ll be hoping to cap his prep career with a third consecutive Class 1A state championship.

Chase Strieby

Stanwood | Sr. | Forward

If the Spartans are to repeat as Wesco 3A North champions and get back to the state tournament, surely Strieby will be a major reason. The senior forward led Stanwood in scoring last season at 13.5 points per game, and his strong play in the blocks paired with AJ Martinka’s skill along the perimeter gives the Spartans a nice one-two punch.

“He is a banger,” Arlington coach Nick Brown said. “He does a bit of everything. He isn’t flashy by any means, but he’s just a real solid player. He does things right and is hard to guard.”

Philip Pepple

Shorecrest | Jr. | C

The blend of size and athleticism Pepple owns is a rare commodity at the high school level. The 6-foot-8 Shorecrest center was a pivotal piece in the Scots’ run to last year’s Class 2A state championship.

“Philip is a pretty special kid,” Shorecrest coach Brian Fischer said. “He can do some things not many kids in Washington can do. He has a lot of height and length and is super explosive.”

Fischer estimated Pepple logged 100 blocks last season and anytime he gets the ball in close to the basket, he’s almost guaranteed to score, which is a big reason he’s drawing interest from NCAA Division I schools.

Drew Bryson

Arlington | Sr. | Guard

Bryson returns from a stellar junior campaign in which he earned first-team Wesco 3A North honors. The 6-foot-2 guard has tremendous range, and coach Nick Brown said the leadership he provides is paramount

“He is a great leader, and a great captain,” Brown said. “He can shoot 3s, but he wants to do other things, and I’ve really seen him improve.”

Expect Bryson to factor heavily into any success the Eagles enjoy this winter.
