Ann Stephenson's grade 5/6 class at Hillcrest Public School is teaching everyone a lesson about caring.

The students organized a sock drive for Barrie's homeless after reading a news article on BarrieToday.com in media literacy class.

"There was a story about Barrie Out of the Cold and the sock drive they were holding," said Stephenson. "The students got inspired and thought that would be a great thing to do to support the sock drive."

The initiative spread to the entire school and now the community is getting the call to help.

Stephenson's class two years ago did a coat drive and presented the dontations to Barrie Out of the Cold.

The teacher says used coats were a bit easier to collect than people having to go out and purchase new socks.

"Our requirement is that they are new, warm winter socks," said Stephenson. "We must have collected about 75 pairs of socks so far."

The new socks will be presented to Barre Out of the Cold on Dec. 2
