After shaking off any residual adolescent awkwardness (see: The Horse Whisperer, Ghost World), Scarlett went rock and roll. In 2003, she debuted a haircut that was soft and pretty up front with a party in the back—the kind of party where the DJ spins Def Leppard. And yet, she made it look cool, thanks to eye-skimming bangs and a bright fuchsia lip stain.

Who doesn’t love a sunset? For the 2011 Vanity Fair Oscar Party, Scarlett let makeup artist Gianpaolo Ceciliato create a look inspired by sundown in St. Tropez. Blending four shadows along the lid—light gold, bronze, copper, and blue black—he then rimmed her eyes with gold and black liner.

When Valentino sent models with romantic milkmaid braids down the runway for spring 2012, Scarlett must have taken notes. For the 2012 European premiere of The Avengers, her version was bolder and more streamlined (no loose wisps), just like her Black Widow character.

Perhaps as a telepathic play on the title of her latest film, Under the Skin, ScarJo went all-in for a sun-kissed vibe at the 2013 Venice International Film Festival. Defined eyes, nude lips, and an effortless chignon were all she needed to set off her luminous golden skin. (The ginormous gemstone necklace was a nice touch, though.)

When most new moms chop their hair, it’s because they barely have time to shower, let alone get glammed up for an awards show. Scarlett’s haircut may be short and she may be time-pressed (during the preceding four months, she had a baby girl and secretly married French journalist Romain Dauriac) but the glamour bit came pretty easily with some shine serum and glittering gloss on her eyes and lips.

Not since the she-mullet of 2003 have we seen Johansson go this edgy with her look, and we’re loving her 2015 bleached-out, punked-up version of the crop: a buzzed undercut with fluffy, hot-roller curls. Worn with contoured blush and edgy matte red lips, the look is as glamorous as it is rebellious.

Growing out short hair was actually the tenth circle of hell in Dante’s “Inferno” (cut from the final manuscript, we hear), but so far Scarlett’s managed to skip the awkward phase. Instead of pasting down new growth with pomade, clipping it away, or hiding it with accessories, she blew it dry and set it free.
