When it comes to celebrity engagement rings, it seems like the sky's the limit.

But sometimes even celebrities think the rings they receive could use a little gussying up and end up with new rings or upgrades of their originals. Often times the "upgrades" come as a surprise or as an anniversary gift, adding to the surprise and excitement of the new bling. Miley Cyrus appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show Thursday and said her engagement ring from Liam Hemsworth wasn't her "aesthetic" but wears it anyway because he "loves" her, which inspired us to look back at stars' original engagement rings vs. the upgraded ones.

1. Bethenny FrankelJason Hoppy proposed to the Real Housewives of New York star with a 6.5-carat pear-shaped diamond, flanked by two trillion-cut diamonds on the side. Two years later she stepped out with a pear-shaped double halo ring with a split-shank band.

2. La La AnthonyCarmelo Anthony first proposed to La La with an 8-carat cushion-cut diamond ring, but after nine years of marriage he surprised her with a major upgrade: a 20-carat oval-cut diamond ring with a halo. He gave it to her on her birthday.

3. Mel B.: Husband Stephen Belafonte gifts the Spice Girls alum a new ring "every couple of years." She has been spotted wearing all different styles, including canary diamond rings and cushion halo engagement rings.

4. Victoria Beckham: Husband David Beckham has given wife Posh Spice at least 13 diamond rings over the years. Thirteen! These are just two of many pieces of frosting.

5. Avril Lavigne: Now ex-husband Chad Kroeger asked Avril to marry him with a 14-carat pear-shaped engagement ring, but then gave her a 20-carat diamond ring on their wedding day.
