After a woman fell while leaving the 25th Street R subway station in Brooklyn on her way home Sunday night, an as-yet-unidentified man helped her up — then trailed her seven blocks to her apartment, where he sexually assaulted her in the stairwell, according to police.

NBC New York reports that the man followed the unidentified 38-year-old woman into the building and up the stairs, grabbing her between the first and second floors and sexually abusing her after she fell. The woman refused medical attention for her minor injuries and told police that she didn’t know her attacker. The only image of him available is from security footage of him entering a nearby bodega just after the attack, which police released.

"[The attack] doesn’t surprise me because the doors over here don’t even have a lock," Jennifer Pereira, a resident of the building, told NBC New York. "I tried to tell the landlord about that." The building’s landlord told NBC New York that he’s repaired the door around a dozen times, but that it breaks again each time. The Special Victim Squad is conducting an ongoing investigation.
