East European drama “The Teacher,” which plays this week at the Tokyo Film Festival, has added new sales deals.

The film, directed by Jan Hrebejk, was acquired for South Korea by Candle Media and by Edko Films for Hong Kong. In the last days Film Movement announced that it has acquired the rights for North America and will release the picture in Spring 2017.

The film is based on the 1980s autobiographical experiences of screenwriter Petr Jarchovsky and stars Zuzana Maurery and Peter Bebjak. The story sees school officials turn against a corrupt woman teacher after a series of incidents. But the teacher’s political connections mean that parents and the school principal must take a considerable risk, and each family must choose to stand up for what they believe in or silently keep the status quo.

Handled by Copenhagen-, New York- and Hong Hong-based LevelK, the film has now been sold to more than 50 territories. Earlier sales included  Sinema TV (for Turkey,) Palace Films (Australia and New Zealand,) Bodega Films (France and Switzerland,) Kino Pasaka (Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania,) Four Corners/September Film (The Netherlands, Belgium and Luxemburg,) Rosebud 21 (Greece) Lev Films (Israel,) Satine Films (Italy) Aurora Films (Poland,) Karma Films (Spain,) Fidalgo (Norway,) Catchplay (Taiwan,) Slovenia RTV (Slovenia) and Encore Inflight (airlines.)

“The Teacher” had its world premiere in Karlovy Vary and earlier this month played at the Busan and Hamptons festivals.
