A structure fire at a south Woodland apartment complex started in a storage area Saturday morning. However, there were no injuries and despite flames and heavy black smoke, the blaze was quickly extinguished by firefighters.
The call went out at 9:16 a.m. when residents of the Woodland Gardens apartments spotted flames and smoke coming from the second floor of a building at the far southwest side of the blocklong complex.
Initial reports were that the fire was in the 1800 block of Sixth Street. However, the apartments are actually at 1737 Sixth St., just south of Donner Way.
Firefighters on scene couldn’t say what caused the blaze, but reported it apparently originated in a second-floor storage room of the reddish-colored structure, and directly above a laundry room that faces a southside parking lot.
No one was inside the storage area or the laundry room when firefighters arrived and no one was reported as being hurt.
Three engine companies responded to the blaze and firefighters quickly put out the flames before sending teams into the building and onto the roof to look hot spots in the walls and attic spaces.
By around 10 a.m., some engine companies were being released.
An investigation is continuing.
