Taoiseach Enda Kenny has led the tributes to former government chief whip and Fine Gael TD Fergus O’Brien who has died after an illness.

Mr O'Brien served as chief whip in two Garret FitzGerald-led governments in the 1980s.

He was also elected Lord Mayor of Dublin in 1980.

Mr O'Brien was first elected to the Dáil for Fine Gael in 1973, for the constituency of Dublin South Central.

He held his seat continuously until his retirement in 1992, apart from the period from February to November 1982.

"He was very proud to serve the people of south east and south central Dublin for almost 20 years," Mr Kenny said in a statement.

"He was a quintessential Dubliner, he loved everything about his city, he loved his people, particularly working class people and took great pleasure in working with them to sort out many problems."

Former taoiseach John Bruton said Mr O'Brien "was never silent when he felt the issues at stake were important."

He continued: "His ministerial career was fruitful and contributed to the development of what was to become the IFSC, in Dublin's , then semi derelict, dockland quarter."
