Third place in the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League basically came down to Tuesday’s match between the Scotts Valley and Harbor high school girls volleyball teams. Harbor outlasted a one-hour delay for senior-night presentations and a determined Falcons squad playing in front of their home crowd to go home with the 25-21, 23-25, 25-17, 25-23 win.

Sierra Laird led Harbor (10-15, 8-5) with 17 kills, Jordyn Skucius had 13 and Joanna Venezio had 10.

Both teams are currently tied for third place in league. If Scotts Valley (17-7, 8-5) can defeat host Soquel, the league’s second-place team, in both teams’ regular-season finale Thursday at 6:30 p.m., it can assure itself the best finish in league in program history.

Harbor will need to defeat Santa Cruz at the same time to assure no worse than third place.

At Pacific Collegiate School 3, Trinity 0 >> Setter Devin Derecho made seven kills in a 25-9, 25-13, 25-17 Mission Trail Athletic League Coastal Division win.

Outside Eliana Abrams also hit seven kills and Corey Friedenbach had four kills in seven attempts with no errors for the Pumas (7-3, 6-3).

PCS next plays at Greenfield on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Salinas 3, at MVC 1 >> The Cowboys proved they have Monte Vista Christian’s number, defeating the Mustangs for a second time in Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division play, 18-25, 25-11, 25-14, 25-14.

Mattea Romo made six kills, 18 assists and 12 digs for MVC (25-4, 7-2), which suffered just its second loss of league play. Sjea Anderson paired 13 kills with 12 digs and Shelby Anderson added nine kills and four blocks.

MVC plays at Alvarez on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

At Kirby 3, Greenfield 0 >> Sonja Fauske had a triple double with 19 assists, 10 digs, 10 aces in the Griffins’ 25-15, 25-20, 25-21 MTAL-C win. Ella Connor added 10 kills, 20 digs and three aces and Trinity Esola made seven kills and 10 digs.

Kirby (2-10, 2-7) plays at Marina on Thursday at 6 p.m. Greenfield (0-8, 0-6) ends its season next Tuesday against top-ranked Oakwood.

At Santa Cruz 3, St. Francis 1 >> Senior Winnie Swiencicki celebrated senior night with 11 kills and a 24-26, 30-28, 25-12, 27-25 SCCAL win.

Both teams wrap up the regular season on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. Santa Cruz (6-16, 6-7) plays at Harbor and the Sharks (8-13, 4-9) play at San Lorenzo Valley.

At Aptos 3, SLV 0 >> Setter Liz McGrath tallied 25 assists as Aptos remained undefeated in SCCAL play, winning in straight sets, 25-8, 25-14, 25-14.

Seniors Ari Rodriguez, Elise Coash, Lizzy McGrath, and Maddie Barrios were honored for Aptos (18-7, 13-0). They tallied 17 of the 27 kills for Aptos, nine out of the 19 digs, and most impressively, 16 of the Mariners’ 17 aces.

Aptos will be at Mount Madonna to wrap up league play on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. SLV (1-17, 0-13) will be at Pinewood on Wednesday at 5:45 p.m. in a nonleague match.

Boy water polo

At Aptos 19, Palma 11 >> Jordan Tallman led Aptos in their final MBL-G match with eight goals.

Ben Tallman scored five goals for the Mariners (10-9, 6-6) and Jakob Langholz added three.

Goalie Eric Tallman had three saves for Aptos.

Girls water polo

Soquel 16, at Christopher 1 >> Malea Jordan led Soquel with five goals as the Knights remained unbeaten in MBL-G play.

Also for the Knights (16-3, 10-0), Ellie Graessle scored four goals and Shea Salvino scored three. Jordan, Graessle and Salvino all had three steals apiece.

Hannah Henry had six saves and two steals in goal for Soquel.

Soquel will face Clovis on Friday at noon as a part of the NorCal Invitational at Sacred Heart Prep.

Aptos 7, Salinas 4 >> Kristin Malone had three goals, two assists and five steals leading Aptos to an MBL-G victory at Hartnell College.

Jordan Wagner added two goals, one assist and swiped the ball four times for the Mariners (12-8, 7-3).

Goalie Desiree Guzman had nine saves for Aptos.

Aptos will host Carmel on Wednesday at 6 p.m., wrapping up league play.

Girls tennis

Aptos 7, at Santa Cruz 0 >> Aptos finished undefeated in league play, winning the SCCAL title.

Individually, Mia Totah, Lila Sampson, Rebecca Sampson, Amy Buchanan, Magdalena Sanchez, Kaitlin Sakae and Gianna Rovai all finished undefeated in league play.

Aptos (12-0 in league) is finished with league play, while Santa Cruz will host Scotts Valley on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

At MVC 4, Alvarez 3 >> Cloria Yao and Sierra Myer won their singles matches for MVC in an MBL-G match.

The doubles teams of Sharon Lai and Sarah Kashani and Rochelel Dai and Sarah Roach also won for the Mustangs.

Monte Vista Christian will host Christopher on Thursday at 3:30 p.m.

St. Francis 7, at SLV 0 >> Gabi Gutierrez defeated Annika Baurele at No. 1 singles, 6-0, 6-3, as all the Sharks won in straight sets.

St. Francis (9-6, 7-4) plays its final match of the season at Soquel on Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Both teams will also participate in the SCCAL Tournament, scheduled for Nov. 2-3 at 10 a.m. at Seascape Sports Club.

Girls golf

SLV 158, Scotts Valley 162 >> Medalist Sierra Mirande shot a 37 for SLV at DeLaveaga Golf Course in a SCCAL match.

Sage Welch finished one stroke back, shooting a 38 for Scotts Valley’s low score.

Both teams wrap up league play on Thursday at 4 p.m., when Scotts Valley faces Harbor at DeLaveaga, while SLV faces Aptos at Boulder Creek Country Club.

Surfing

Young takes second in opening heat >> Santa Cruz’s Nat Young took second place in the opening heat of the Meo Rip Curl Pro Portugal, event No. 10 of 11 on the World Surf League’s Championship Tour.

Young, ranked No. 20 on the CT, finished with a two-wave score of 11.77, finishing behind Australian Kai Otton (12.43) tops and ahead of Australian Julian Wilson (11.40).

Young faces American Conner Coffin in Heat 11 of Round 2, an elimination round.

The event’s competition window runs through Oct. 29.
