Suffolk Treasurer: Department Merger Should Help Speed Up Property Tax Refunds
NEW YORK (CBSNewYork) -- Residents in Suffolk County should be able to receive their property tax refunds faster after two offices recently merged within the county.
As WCBS 880's Sophia Hall reported, if you grieve your taxes in Suffolk and it's determined you deserve a refund, you might have to wait more than a year to get your money back.

In fact, since 2013 Treasurer Barry Paul said the county owed residents and business owners more than $96 million in refunds, but because it took so long to pay them the county also had to pay $2 million in interest charges.
"This year in March, when I became the treasurer there was still about $1,500 from the 2013 tax year. Then there were over $11,000 for the 13-14 tax year," he said.
Paul said the situation is getting much better now that the treasurer's office and comptroller's office merged, giving them more manpower to get the refund paperwork completed.
