Paladins: Champions of the Realm, the new team-based shooter from SMITE developer Hi-Rez Studios, is coming to Xbox One and PS4, Hi-Rez Studios' console producer Kabir Barry posted on the PS Blog.

Paladins is a free-to-play fantasy-themed first-person shooter that, in many many ways, reminds us of Overwatch.

The open beta on PC attracted over 1,000,000 players apparently, and has been the subject of a lot of articles on PC sites... most of them comparing it to Blizzard's ludicrously successful multiplayer project.

The game will feature 17 champions and the developer plans to add more heroes on a regular basis. There are snipers, tanks, support characters and all sorts of other playable archetypes... which I'm sure we could also compare to another popular team-based game...

A collectable card system underpins the core gameplay in Paladins. It works in a similar way to Paragon, where you build a deck of cards and customise your hero around how you'd prefer to play. This is how Barry explains the system on the PS Blog:

Quick example: Androxus is a creepy demon dude with a revolver. He can be a pure gunslinger, dashing into close range and unloading rapid-fire shots. He can be an elusive airborne sniper, hovering above the Realm. He can be a counter-puncher, using an enemy’s own bullets against them. Or he can be something else entirely — whatever you come up with!

The game will be free to play when it launches, but you can choose to put $20 into the game straight away to unlock all the heroes off the bat.

Paladins Closed Beta starts soon, and the signups start today. You can sign up for the beta here.

  • That is the PS4 beta link
  • https://www.paladins.com/xbox-beta-signup/ Here is the link to the Xbox One sign up, above is the PS4 link.
  • I mean I guess that's good for people who don't yet have Overwatch and have been thinking of buying it. Sure it's free, but Overwatch is a vastly superior game, and I personally can't justify supporting a developer that copied another in such spectacular fashion.
  • Considering their success with Smite, which of course was imspired by the MOBA's that came before it, I'm willing to give this game a chance. And honestly Overwatch isn't even totally original, it's pretty much Team Fortress 2 with heroes that you'd usually expect from a MOBA. Plus this game will be free, which to me is a really good price, and it's getting good reviews on Steam, so I'll sign up for the beta and try it out.
  • #3 says overwatch is vastly superior yet this game isn't out and is incomplete. Odd how you can say that already. Plus check ur facts this game was announced and shown footage of before Overwatch was even announced. You supported Overwatch yet they copied TF2 so wtf? U play CoD? Well they copied BFF.
  • i wonder if this game will have Asian server cause Smite is absolutely unplayable from here. 800 ping no matter if we pick North American, European or Australian server ...
  • Signed up! I do like the concept of this game, especially with the card system, sounds like a good twist on the genre.
  • Signed up. Had no idea it was coming to X1. Yeah, its a bit of Overwatch. But from what I heard, the games been in development for a long time and they both borrowed from each other. (Overwatch and this.)
  • @5 You obviously just believe YouTube comments. Overwatch Alpha was around April 2015. Paladins Alpha was around late August/early September 2015. Google is your friend.
  • @3 @5 @9 It doesn't matter really, they both are heavily influenced and drew inspiration from TF2.
  • Because every single game with cartoony graphics is like TF2, right?
  • I've fixed the beta sign up link, sorry about that guys.
  • Also, on the topic of the games being similar and their development timelines, the main guy at Hi-Rez went off about that on Twitter and spoke on it to IGN. http://www.ign.com/articles/2016/09/20/paladins-developer-responds-to-overwatch-comparisons
  • @9: And what, you think the times these games had alphas means absolutely anything when it comes to who started their game first and who copied who? Google is YOUR friend, I suggest you use it to learn about game development. The Paladin guys didn't see the Overwatch Alpha and then go "hey let's make that" and whip up their own alpha in 4-5 months. If you think that's what happened, you have a lot to learn.
  • Overwatch and Paladins can both co-exist, neither really does much that is entirely unique and it is clear both games borrow elements from each other, there is a character in Paladins that is very similar to D.va, but we didn't see anything about D.va until after Paladins showed their version of this character off
  • @14 They were both working on their respective games, but the reason I posted the alpha releases is because Hi Rez obviously got their hands on it and started making adjustments to copy Overwatch. This isn't very difficult to search or look up. Starting to think Paladins fanboys/loyalists just choose to ignore these facts.
  • I don't mind about the similarities, I'll give Paladin's a go. Seen some videos on YouTube and looks fun.
  • Yawn... repeats. Overwatch been great and Battleborn is failed but I dunno about this one. Lol
  • I loved the elder scrolls before ESO, but I'd never played an MMO before so I was very skeptical, but Neverwinter was free so it was a great way to try an MMO. I liked it, and ended up buying ESO... and its great! This game is free, so it's a great way to give new MOBA players a way to try the genre. The card system sounds intriguing. I'll definitely give it a try.
