NetflixMarvel's Luke Cage is a timely one. The series stars Mike Colter as the titular hero, he's super-strong and has indestructible skin. Bullets fly off of him.
"Well, I think for a character like this at this point in our history, it's like [showrunner Cheo Hodari Coker] says, Cheo coined it, ‘We're ready for the bullet-proof black man,'" Frank Whaley, one of the stars of the series, said. "You can't say it any better than that. More over, it's a great story, but there's never been a more timely show than Luke Cage."
But the social commentary isn't the only thing that viewers will notice.
"I think people are going to be surprised by how funny the show is. I think what's interesting about Mike Colter's portrayal of Luke is that he's very light on his feet, he's funny. But at the same time, when he has to be emotional he can be emotional, when he has to be smooth he can be smooth," Coker said. "I think it's just a very entertaining show because we have so much else going on. I think some of the things we do are going to shock people, that's really what I'm excited about. Not only to see how they react to episode seven, but also to see how they react to the back six."
After making his debut in Marvel's Jessica Jones, Luke Cage heads uptown to Harlem and reconnects with the past he desperately tried to bury. He comes into the crosshairs of Mariah Dillard (Alfre Woodward) and Cornell "Cottonmouth" Stokes (House of Cards' Mahershala Ali) in his quest to quash corruption. Simone Missick, Theo Rossi and Rosario Dawson also star.
