Amanda Fort helped get Aptos High’s girls golf team off to a strong start with a 113-152 win over Santa Cruz on Tuesday in Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League play at DeLaveaga Golf Course.
Fort, a junior, shot a 7-over 30 after six holes to earn medalist honors by five strokes. Megan Eldredge followed with a 35 and Gali Carrillo shot 39 for the Mariners (1-0). They play Harbor on Wednesday at 4 p.m. at Seascape Golf Course.
Ariola Turzo shot a 38 to pace Santa Cruz.
Girls tennis
St. Francis 4, Soquel 3 >> Aptos swept singles play to earn an SCCAL victory at Imperial Courts in Aptos.
No. 2 singles player Gabi Guiterrez defeated Ireland Conti, 7-5, 6-0, to remain undefeated in the SCCAL at 6-0.
“The weather cooperated, finally,” said Sharks coach Gay Finch. “Yesterday we would probably have been wilting.”
St. Francis (6-4, 4-2) begins the second round of SCCAL play on Tuesday at 3:30 p.m. at Harbor.
At MVC 6, Alisal 1 >> Four matches went to three sets, and the Mustangs won three of them in a Monterey Bay League Gabilan Division victory.
Della Zhou defeated Alicia Ramirez, 6-1, 6-7 (2), 13-10 at No. 3 singles and Sharon Lai outlasted Esmeralda Garcia 4-6, 6-4, 11-9 at No. 4 singles.
At No. 3 doubles, Hannah Snyder and Julissa Escutia outlasted Yesenia Magallares and Yareli Ramirez, 6-3, 3-6, 10-7 for Monte Vista Christian, which next plays at Alvarez at 4 p.m. Thursday.
At Santa Cruz 5, Scotts Valley 2 >> Stella Davidsdottir won her No. 3 singles match for Santa Cruz in a SCCAL match.
The No. 2 doubles team of Ellie Readdie and Emily Nolan also won for Santa Cruz (3-2).
On Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Santa Cruz will host San Lorenzo Valley and Scotts Valley will be at Aptos.
At Monterey 7, Pajaro Valley 0 >> Epinoee Miller, Jackie Bautista and Sara Gensel were singles winners for Monterey in a MBL Pacific match.
On Thursday at 4 p.m. Monterey will be at Gilroy and Pajaro Valley will be hosting North Salinas.
Girls volleyball
At MVC 3, Alvarez 0 >> Sjea Anderson had a double-double with 16 kills and 12 digs in the Mustangs’ 25-12, 25-22, 25-15 MBL-G home victory.
Mattea Romo added nine kills and four aces for MVC (17-3, 3-1) and Shelby Anderson notched seven kills, an ace and four blocks.
The win sets up a showdown with defending MBL-G champion and current league leader San Benito on Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at MVC.
Harbor 3, at Santa Cruz 0 >> Sierra Laird made 10 kills and an ace as Harbor brought home a 25-22, 28-26, 25-18 win in SCCAL play.
Jordyn Skucius added 14 kills and two aces for the Pirates (6-13, 4-2), who next host Mount Madonna on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
Santa Cruz (3-13, 3-4) is next at SLV on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
At Aptos 3, Mount Madonna 0 >> The Loma Fire forced the match to be moved to Aptos, where the Mariners snatched the SCCAL win behind 15 aces, seven of which came from junior libero Dana Foley. The scores were: 25-17, 25-17, 30-28.
Aptos (11-8, 7-0) had four hitters with five kills or more and four defenders with five digs or more.
On Thursday at 6:30 p.m., Aptos will host Scotts Valley and Mount Madonna will face Harbor.
Soquel 3, Scotts Valley 1 >> Sam Boyle made 22 kills as Scotts Valley stole a game from Soquel in a 25-13, 19-25, 25-18, 25-20 SCCAL loss.
Maile Sussman added eight kills while Serena Garcia had seven kills and nine digs. Casson Rasmussen had seven digs and Ava Glassey contributed five aces for the Falcons (12-5, 3-3). They play at Aptos on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.
At PCS 3, Greenfield 0 >> Senior outside Eliana Abrams and junior middle Corey Friedenbach each hit eight kills in the Pumas’ 25-11, 25-11, 25-17 Mission Trail Athletic League Coastal Division victory.
Pacific Collegiate School (4-2, 3-2) next plays at Marina on Thursday at 6 p.m.
Seaside 3, Pajaro Valley 1 >> Samone Johnson had 14 kills and 18 digs in Seaside’s 25-21, 30-28, 6-25, 25-16 win over Pajaro Valley. Sydney Johnson added seven kills and Cecilia Reyes 35 assists.
Boys water polo
Carmel 10, at Santa Cruz 9 >> Kevan Auger and Parker Fisher both scored three goals as Carmel took over second place with the MBL-G win.
Leo Gonzales-Smith had two goals, three assists and three steals for the Padres (11-4, 6-2). West Whitaker and Max House scored fourth-quarter goals for Carmel.
Carmel will host Aptos at 6 p.m. on Thursday
Soquel 13, Salinas 12 >> Henry Bistrin led Soquel with five goals in a MBL-G match at Cabrillo College.
Kalani Fouts scored four goals for the Knights (12-4, 8-0) and Jake Graessle and Jafet Hernandez had three assists.
Soquel will be at St. Francis-Mountain View on Monday at 6 p.m.
Girls water polo
Santa Cruz 10, at Carmel 2 >> Izzy Kelley and Angelica Randazzo both score three goals for Santa Cruz in a MBL-G match.
River Thomas had 10 saves in goal for Santa Cruz (7-6, 3-4).
Santa Cruz will host SLV on Wednesday at 6 p.m.
At Aptos 17, Christopher 8 >> Kiegan Lee managed six goals, five assists and three steals in the Mariners’ MBL-G victory. Skylar Poulos scored five times and Kaylee Pryor, filling in for the ill Deseree Guzman, had nine saves in the goal.
Aptos (9-5, 5-2) will host Soquel at 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Soquel 17, at SLV 1 >> Hannah Henry made nine saves and six steals in goal for undefeated Soquel in an MBL-G game. Ellie Graessle scored four goals, while Shea Salvino, Madi Collins and Izzy Dent added two apiece.
The Knights (Soquel 13-2, 7-0) next play at Aptos on Tuesday at 5 p.m.
Men’s soccer
At Hartnell 2, Cabrillo 0 >> Benito Chavez scored both Hartnell’s goals in the first half, the second on an assist by Javier Alfaro, in a Coast Conference crossover match at Rabobank Stadium in Salinas.
Cabrillo (0-5-1, 0-1) managed three shots on goal. It will play at Skyline on Friday at 1 p.m.
Undefeated Hartnell (6-0-2, 1-0) plays at West Valley on Friday at 4 p.m.
