The local officials hoped that the owner could remove the car soon as a school is set to be constructed on the site, according to the sub-district office.

As temperatures began to drop, the car has also become a temporary shelter for homeless people.

One homeless person, aged just 15, told a local reporter: 'I sleep inside as I have seen ivy grown around the car.'

The homeless teenager said he earned a living by collecting rubbish. He said he spotted the car one day and thought it had been abandoned by the owner.

He said: 'It's warm sleeping here at night.'

However, the local residents were puzzled by the fact that that the car had been left here for such a long time.

Zhang Gensheng, a street patrol officer, said: 'The car owner should have kept its door shut. We won't have noticed the car if we did not see a rubbish collector sleeping there.'

One resident told a reporter from hnr.cn: 'This car is still in a good shape, why is it left here?'

Another resident speculated: 'Maybe some accident happened to the car owner, so he was not free to take care of the car, or he may have abandoned it because he bought a new car.'

Another asked: 'Is it stolen and dumped by the thief?'

One worried about the condition of the car: 'These ivy grow very fast. They will cover the vehicle within a month.'
