Nothing in football other than transfers are decided in August. Titles are not won on sodden summer evenings like this and there is always the risk of looking foolish when you draw conclusions based on just three league games, but Manchester United have got their swagger back under Jose Mourinho.

There is an arrogance about this United side, flowing from the manager down, that even at this embryonic stage of the campaign, does not look misplaced. That will upset plenty of people in English football, of course, but it should delight their own supporters.

It was there when they entered the KCOM Stadium, it was there when they stood with hands on hips before the first whistle, it was there when they celebrated Marcus Rashford’s late winner and it was there when they boarded the team bus with a win that means they go into the international break top of the Premier League.

Rashford's winning goal

Jose Mourinho says:

I always believed that sooner or later the goal would arrive. I have to say Hull did an amazing job and defended with everything. If I was the chairman I would give immediately the job to Mike Phelan because in the eyes of everyone the players could not do more than they did.

He's (Rashford) working extremely well and both times when the team was in trouble and needed one goal he came on and gave a special contribution. He can play with Ibra. The kid is a striker and when I play with him and Ibra together we give the opposition different problems.

FULL TIME

And that's it! United take all the points. Hull be gutted to have lost it so late but they defended superbly throughout and it was only a late Rooney surge that broke them down. Curtis Davies was absolutely brilliant tonight, Rashford made the difference for United.

90 mins +2

GOOOOAAAAALLLLLL! RASHFORD HAS DONE IT IN FERGIE TIME!

Hull 0 - 1 Man Utd

Great run from Rooney! He takes on his man and cuts into the box from wide on the left. As he reaches the goal he slides the ball across the six yard box and Rashford runs in - perfectly timed - to slam the ball home and snatch the three points for Mourinho's men.

90 mins+2

SO CLOSE HULL! Clucas gets down the left, waits for Diomande, he passes to Meyler and Meyler shoots from 20 yards! It's just over the bar!

90 mins

Hull nearly have a chance on the counter but the forward pass is over hit. There are going to be four minutes of added time.

88 mins

Wow that is close. Rashford teases the defender, flicks it to Shaw, Shaw passes to Pogba. Pogba dummies the shot, makes space for another 20 yards out... and bends his effort just wide of the post. It's still 0-0!

87 mins

A couple of United corners are cleared away, Rooney chips in a second cross and Rashford heads it on. Pogba reaches a high foot up to try to turn the ball into the goal but Meyler is there and gets a kick to the face. Free-kick.

United win the ball back and Rashford whips a great ball into the box from the right which Zlatan just can't get to. He applauds the cross. Rashford has been excellent since he's come on!

Just look at how many shots United have peppered the Hull goal with. Only five minutes to go for the home side!

84 mins

United are on all out attack here and firing crosses into the box. Mkhitaryan has space and time in the box and charges up his effort but is blocked by Davies, who throws himself at the ball to block a certain goal. Can Hull hang on?!

82 mins

Straight after that, Pogba gets into the box down the right and fires a pass across the box. Davies tries to clear but knocks it towards his own goal! The keeper saves! So close to an awful moment for Hull there.

81 mins

What a save by Jakupovic! Rashford goes on a little run and soon has four defenders trying to stop him! They can't and he bends a low shot towards the far post between them. The keeper dives and tips it wide of the post. Great play by the United forward.

79 mins

It is absolutely pelting it down as Pogba lines up a free-kick in Beckham territory. He strikes it... but doesn't get enough bend and the ball is quite a way wide of the post.

76 mins

Rooney waits for the ball to drop from a cleared header and strikes it on the volley! Side netting.

HULL NEARLY SCORE! A shot from long range comes off Bailly and fizzes wide of the post with De Gea completely stranded. What a story that would have been!

Hull are in United's third for the first time in weeks... but Huddlestone punts a volley over the bar.

Rooney has also now been booked for "saying something" to John Moss.

73 mins

Rashford is on for Juan Mata.

Wayne Rooney is furious with Luke Shaw's pass from right to left and can't keep it in play.

Nobody has scored yet.

72 mins

What a run by Mkhitaryan! He picks the ball up near his own box, jogs forward and then suddenly bursts into life, burning past five Hull players in a straight line. Huddlestone decides that's not on and trips him up from behind, taking a yellow card for his tackle.

70 mins

Hernandez and Diomande go on a brave quest into United's half, run into trouble, and lose the ball. They are the only players who venture out of their own half during the counter-attack. This should give you an idea of how hard Hull are trying to score:

I think De Gea might actually have gone home.

67 mins

Pogba spots a chance to shoot from 40 yards and sends the ball flying towards goal. It's moving at some speed but keeps rising and ends up high and wide. At least he's trying though. Rooney hasn't done anything yet. And don't go thinking I'm anti-Rooney - I think he's still alright and does a lot on the pitch that goes unnoticed. That said, he's not bringing much to the team here, especially as United look most dangerous when they attack at pace. Rooney keeps slowing the play down.

65 mins

Zlatan does one of his trademark little backheel volley flick passes and Mata is one on one with the keeper in the box. What a touch this boy has. Mata is closed down and falls to the floor... but he was offside and nothing comes of it anyway. Honestly, Zlatan is something else. He looks a cut above the rest of the players on this pitch, like he's from a different species or something.

63 mins

It's fairly even in possession as well, which is strange because it feels like United have all the play. Pogba fires a pass between the lines of defenders, it deflects off one and Zlatan takes a snap shot on the volley. Deflected just wide!

Rooney's corner is awful and headed away at the near post.

62 mins

Martial cuts inside onto his right foot and tries a shot from 25 yards but pulls it and it bobbles wide of the goal. He knows that's his last involvement anyway and looks at the bench straight away. Sure enough, Mkhitaryan is ready to come on and replace him.

59 mins

Ibrahimovic (sorry, I keep switching between that and Zlatan for ease of writing) controls a high ball on the edge of the area on his chest and swipes with his right foot but kicks thin air. He's annoyed and turns away in disgust.

Martial looks off the pace at the moment. He's normally a lot faster than this. Isn't he? Or have Hull's full-backs gotten really fast recently?

56 mins

That's a photo of Zlatan lifting the ball over the keeper earlier before back-heeling wide of the empty goal.

Meanwhile, in the present day, nothing's really working for United at the moment. Martial appears to be the one who will make way for Mkhitaryan. I'd dinghy Rooney as well and either push Rashford up as a foil to Zlatan or stick Mata through the middle as a playmaker and stick Rashford out left.

53 mins

Rashford and Mkhitaryan are warming up on the touchline. Mourinho wants some width! Also, Rooney and Martial have not been good so far.

50 mins

Rooney does well to run onto a deflected cross and get his head to it. The keeper saves easily. Curtis Davies has taken a knock now and is down on the floor. It's more than likely just a knock to the head.

46 mins

Snodgrass has gone down on the pitch and looks to have realised that his game is done. Poor boy. He's getting some treatment from the medical staff but the expression on his face is the same when a doctor says 'does this hurt?' and you're trying really hard to pretend it doesn't.

Here comes Shaun Maloney, who was warming up all half time - presumably for this exact scenario.

KICK-OFF 2

And we're back! It's pouring with rain and Snodgrass doesn't look too happy with his leg.

Analysis

Well it's not been the most exciting game in the world but then what you have to remember is that this a Jose Mourinho team playing against Hull. A goal would change the match completely, making Hull come out of their shell if they concede one and forcing United to attack with some intensity if the home side scores first.

I want goals.

HALF TIME

After two minutes of injury time, the referee goes inside to eat an entire orange. He is thirsty and hungry. But not for long.

I'm referring to footballers having half time oranges here, in case you weren't sure.

45 mins

Pogba tries a little roulette turn instead of passing - it's really clever actually - and wins a foul. Rooney whips the free-kick in, Zlatan times his run well, lifts a leg out to take the ball down with his first touch but is slightly too wide of the goal. He makes up for it by trying an audacious back heel into an empty net... but he hits the side netting! So close! And he is furious with himself for missing.

43 mins

Still no goals. Mata tries a header from a quick cross fired across his path but the keeper catches it easily.

40 mins

Robertson brings the ball through the middle, Diomande takes the ball to feet, turns and speeds towards goal. He tries to thread in Hernandez... but overcooks it. Hernandez had stopped running anyway.

37 mins

Good header from Hernandez! Hull work the ball forwards and a cross finds the striker on the edge of the box. He gets a lot of power into his shot but De Gea watches it and dives to catch the ball to his left.

United attack down the other end, Mata does a stepover and completely burns Robertson, fires low at the goal and the keeper parries. The ball drops for Rooney inside the box, he shoots.... it comes off the defender on the line! Rooney wants a penalty! It's definitely not a handball though.

35 mins

Mata is nudged out of the way by Diomande on the edge of the box and United have a free-kick in Juan Mata territory, one of the lesser visited attractions at Jurassic Park. Mata takes it... but the shot is saved low in the middle of the goal.

33 mins

It feels like Fellaini is definitely probably getting a red card at some point today.

Pogba has a shot from 35/40 yards, trying to knuckleball it and get the ball to pick up speed from the turf, which is being quickly submerged under a lot of rain.

30 mins

It looks like he's going to be alright! The stretcher isn't required and Snodgrass jogs back onto the pitch.

29 mins

Robertson gets into the final third and curls a brilliant cross to the back post. Snodgrass dives in for a header but Shaw is just in front of him and gets it away. Snodgrass collides with the post and is in a bit of pain. I think he's nailed his knee off it. That's not good because Snodgrass spent the best part of a year out with a damaged kneecap.

26 mins

Fellaini is booked for a clumsy, stupid challenge from behind, going straight through the back of the Hull player as he ran towards goal. Somehow he cannot understand why it's even a foul when it's one of the clearest bookable offences in the history of mankind. Not the wrestler. Fellaini is still at it and Rooney has to come across to be told by the ref that anymore of this nonsense and he'll be off, such are the new rules.

Snodgrass stands over the kick.... and it's just wide! Up and over the wall from 25 yards, the midfielder bends his shot inches wide. That ball was moving at high speed.

23 mins

Pogba whips a dipping cross from the left into the box. It's really hard to defend against but also difficult to control and a defender hoofs the ball away.

20 mins

Valencia is really good when he goes forwards - just now he's skinned two Hull players for pace and crossed into the box. Ibrahimovic's shot is closed down though and United start again. It's proving difficult to find a gap in Hull's defence, which in the defensive third seems to be a 4-1-4-1 with the lone striker waiting near the halfway line and everyone else deep.

17 mins

Blind takes a corner which is cleared at the near post, Valencia switches the play and Martial tries to get it back into the box.

14 mins

Shaw goes on a run down the left but has his heels clipped by Snodgrass. Nothing else really happens. Mata and Rooney are having a slightly heated argument about who should be pressing where and when.

10 mins

Paul Pogba has been on the pitch for 10 minutes now and still hasn't scored a hat-trick. How dare he. Doesn't he know how much he cost?

He is really good on the ball though and Hull defenders seem to be a bit wary of getting close to him because he can quite easily glide away with his long legs and sense of balance.

United have Hull defending close to their own box and are trying to create something in a packed defensive area. Martial crosses into the box from the left and Zlatan gets his head to it... it's over the bar!

The ball hits the actual back of the net and the United fans at the other end of the ground celebrate. They think it's a goal. It is not.

7 mins

Snodgrass does take the kick... but he hits it neck height and it comes back off the wall. Huddlestone balloons an effort from distance way over the bar.

6 mins

Hull are playing some nice passes here and are switching the ball from player to player in the United half. Fellaini gets bored and fouls Diomande on the edge of the box. Snodgrass territory.

3 mins

Hull start on the attack, United win the ball back and Martial runs down the left. Ibrahimovic lifts his leg above his head to take down a cross into the box. How is that possible?

KICK-OFF

The stadium announcer guy is a bit excited as he screams "COME ON! COME ON!!!!!!" very loudly into the mic. Then the football begins and the crowd falls quiet for a bit. Not sure everyone's had the same pre-match juice as that guy.

Anyway the game is underway!

Here come the players

It's nearly time for a game of soccer. The players are out on the pitch - POGBA IS THERE omg - and the match shall soon commence. Now let us sing the Premier League anthem together.

 A tear in my eye.

JM: "Ohhhh you don't say, that is important. I better go"

AB: "That's OK, I'll wait for you here!"

[walks off pretending to be in conversation, glancing back to see if Alex Bruce has left yet]

He's been talking to Des Kelly before the match.

We've started well but it's just the start and I'm aware that every point is difficult to get. Every opponent gives you a difficult time.

Jose Mourinho hates Schweinsteiger

One player who definitely won't be featuring today, or possibly ever again for Manchester United, is Bastian Schweinsteiger, who Jose Mourinho just doesn't seem to like.

To be honest Bastian is not speaking a lot. He gave this last statement, which he is free to do in an objective and polite way, like he did. No problems at all. I thought after I read some quotes from people at Bayern Munich that they would run to Manchester to bring him back, but no.

I am quite surprised that Mr Rummenigge is not here now to take him back, but it is our squad. I love Andreas Pereira, the kid, as a player, I would love to have him in my squad, but he is going to Granada to play. I like Cameron Jackson very much, but he goes to Wolverhampton to play because I have Luke Shaw, Danny Blind and Marcos Rojo. These are the kind of decisions that every club does.

Man Utd lineup

No change for Jose Mourinho - he's named an unchanged side from United's last game, which they dominated. Also, Pogba starts!

Hull lineup

First up - Hull have managed to field a full team of professional footballers even though almost everyone on their payroll wants to escape. Mike Phelan knows a thing or two about management though and has worked wonders with what he has on offer at the moment.

When are Hull City playing Manchester United?

Mike Phelan, the Hull City caretaker manager, will lead his team out at KCOM Stadium on Saturday, August 27, 2016 ahead of the 5.30pm (BST) kick off against his former paymasters Manchester United.

How can I follow the match?

BT Sport’s build-up to this mouth-watering contest gets under way at 5pm so be sure you are back from town and on the sofa in plenty of time – we wouldn’t want you missing kick off. Alternatively, if you can’t make it to a television don’t worry, you can follow all the action – yes every kick – right here on this very page. Bookmark it, now.

What does the form guide look like?

Good, really good. Both sides have 100 per cent records after Hull beat Premier League champions Leicester City 2-1 on the opening day of the season before following that up with a 2-0 defeat of Swansea City.

Jose Mourinho's side, meanwhile, managed to beat Bournemouth 3-1 away from home before going down to the south coast where they beat Southampton on the second weekend of the new season. That's right folks, this is a battle for Premier League bragging rights. Sort of.

Team news

Hull defender Harry Maguire is in contention for his first Premier League appearance of the season against caretaker boss Mike Phelan's former club Manchester United.

Maguire came through 90 minutes in Tuesday night's EFL Cup win at Exeter after an ankle injury, but Phelan may decide to start with midfielder Jake Livermore in central defence alongside Curtis Davies.

Phelan made seven changes in midweek and the likes of Abel Hernandez, Adama Diomande, Robert Snodgrass, Tom Huddlesstone and Andy Robertson will all return, but Greg Luer will be sidelined for several weeks after sustaining a knee injury.

Provisional squad: Jakupovic, Robertson, Livermore, Davies, Maguire, Elmohamady, Clucas, Meyler, Huddlestone, Hernandez, Snodgrass, Diomande, Maloney, Bowen, Clackstone, Kuciak, Olley, Tymon.

What's our prediction?

Sorry Hull fans, but we cannot see beyond another three points for Ibrahimovic, Pogba et al. Hull  City 1 Manchester United 3.
