For many, a trip to Disneyland is a summer rite of passage. But, for one family, the happiest place on earth became the itchiest. Two Augusts ago, a Bay Area family left the theme park's Grand Californian Hotel with more than what they came with — bedbugs — and now they're suing.
In their lawsuit, filed this Thursday in Los Angeles Superior Court, parents Joseph and Danielle Jones allege that the Disney hotel ignored their initial complaints, as CBS reports. Even though the family found bites on their bodies, they were told they were just from mosquitoes — it took an eventual visit to an Oakland hospital, when the bites were confirmed to be from bedbugs. The family ended up having to throw out their clothes and luggage that they had brought to the Disneyland hotel.
The Jones' lawsuit alleges battery, negligence, nuisance and both intentional and negligent infliction of emotional distress and seeks unspecified damages, CBS reports. It also holds Disney's Grand Californian Hotel responsible for fraudulent concealment, as in their lawsuit the family points out that the resort has a history of bedbug complaints.
According to BedBugRegistry.com, 13 different users have called out the hotel for bedbugs since 2010, as LAist points out.
While bedbugs don’t spread disease, their bites are extremely itchy and some people are allergic to bedbug saliva. (Not to mention, they can definitely cause anxiety!) Bedbug infestations are also notoriously difficult to eliminate, and often require professional extermination, especially because they hide so well in the nooks and crannies of a room or home. Many people often have to throw items away because bedbugs could still be hiding in them.
