Phoenix dust storm of August 21, 2016 – Views from below, inside, and above
A big dust storm covered the Phoenix, Arizona area on Sunday evening, August 21, 2016. The storm rolled over central Phoenix and east Valley cities of Tempe, Chandler, Mesa, Gilbert and Apache Junction and nearby sections of Interstate 10.
Andrew Deemer, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service said the storm was 'bigger than small.'
"I'll give it seven out of 10," Deemer said and added that dry conditions and strong winds helped the storm stay together longer than usual.
“This one was able to pick up enough soil and kind of last its way through a good portion of the metro area,” Deemer said.
Dust storms in this region are a regular occurrence during monsoon season.
