Winter Is Coming...

Sophie Turner Went Blonde and the Internet Doesn't Know How to Feel

Society has had a strange relationship with redheads. Across cultures and time periods, gingers have been variously fetishized and reviled, put on a pedestal and burned at the stake. Nowadays, thankfully, we have a more chill relationship with them, but that doesn't mean we're not enthusiastic about the uncommon shade. While some of our favorite celebs show off bright red locks, there have been weird notions hanging around about redheads (like the idea that they smell different from other people), and the world's largest sperm bank made news a few years back after refusing redheaded donors—turns out there just wasn't demand for bright-haired babies. Now Game of Thrones star Sophie Turner is getting a front-row seat to this "It's Complicated" status by making a major hair-color switch, giving her Sansa Stark strands the Daenerys Targaryen treatment.

It all started when Turner posted an Instagram photo yesterday with a spill of platinum hair and the caption "I did a thing....."

The response has been mixed but by no means mild. Of the more than 300,000 likes and nearly 9,000 comments, many have been supportive, calling the color beautiful and inspirational. Others are not impressed. "Why Sophie, Why?" wrote one user, while another responded with a confused "What The... ??!?!?!?!?!?!?" Meanwhile, on Twitter, people have had even stronger reactions, many posting homages to Turner's red of yore and others responding with shots of Turner in previous blonde years as a sort of beauty rebuttal. The red-hair fans are not appeased. One user tweeted, "i can't believe sophie turner has bleached hair now i wanna punch a wall." "Absolutely not OK with the fact that Sophie Turner, aka Sansa Stark, dyed her hair BLONDE....." said another.

As many have pointed out, like fellow redhead icon Emma Stone, Turner's hair is, in fact, naturally blonde. Considering the number of celebs who took the platinum plunge earlier this summer, and the fact that Game of Thrones won't start filming season 7 until later this summer, we can't blame Turner for taking the opportunity to try on a slightly bolder version of her natural shade. We're still anticipating a return to red with Sansa's glorious return to Winterfell, but in the meantime we're loving these sunny strands.
