3 Lifestyle Habits You Need To Succeed

This article is more than 7 years old.

Why do some people make life, work, and success look so easy? Are they genetically gifted? Do they know something the rest of us don’t? Or, have they created certain habits that allow them to push forward while the rest of us get stuck in the muck?

Curious after a witnessing an extreme reaction to a Facebook post by a friend that read, “No matter what I do, I can’t seem to get ahead. Does anyone else feel this way?” we wanted to find some research that could shed some light on the habits of successful people.

Of course, this is just a short list, or starting point, but these three lifestyle habits are a great place to start.

1. Be Mission-Oriented

James Bond, The Avengers, and the pizza guy who always delivers on time—what do they all have in common? It’s simple: They’re mission-oriented. Each is motivated by the knowledge of where they’re going and why. Whether they’re driven by a passion for spy craft, a goal to save the world, or simply delivering a piping hot pie, they’ve got a mission to accomplish. Believing in that mission gives them the strength to persevere and succeed, regardless of the obstacles.

A study by the O.C. Tanner Institute, in fact, reveals that 90% of award-winning work is accomplished by people who are willing to grit it out until they witness the connection between their actions and their results. Basically, if there’s a roadblock, these people find a new road, and will keep finding new roads until the destination is reached.

The question is, do you know your mission? Heading into any project, goal, or new situation, stop and ponder the question. In fact, answer it now: Why are you reading this article? What is your mission—and how can you accomplish it? (If you’re searching for character insights, you’re on the right track. Just read on!) Knowing your mission is a crucial building block of success, as mission-oriented people accomplish goals and lead teams better than those who lack a vision.

2. Strategize And Execute

In just two decades, the conqueror Genghis Khan went from an outcast living in exile to the ruler of the largest land empire in history, a plot of land twice the size of the ancient Roman Empire. How did he accomplish this feat? In large part, through smart, careful planning—followed by bold execution. In The Leadership Secrets of Genghis Khan, author John Man reveals these steps were two crucial factors to Khan’s incredible success.

Strategize and execute. Makes sense as a motto for a conqueror, but how does it apply to you? Start with your morning routine. Strategize the best use of your time: streamline breakfast, keep the commute as calm as possible, and arrive at work every day equipped with the necessary tools. And to make sure you execute this carefully crafted plan, stop hitting snooze. It only derails your progress. Once you conquer your morning, the rest of the workday becomes easier. Apply the same motto as you strategize and execute important initiatives at work. Formulate plans to accomplish your goals, and stick to your guns. Bring the team on board. Whether you’re trying to invade Eurasia, or simply meet next quarter’s sales goals, this proven habit duo won’t fail you.

3. Put Your Best Foot Forward

Imagine you’re a hiring manager considering two candidates with similar resumes: a perennially late, disheveled, and stressed guy, and a put-together, well-dressed subject matter expert. Who would you choose? It’s a no brainer. The second candidate, who demonstrates passion and respect for your workplace through their appearance and mannerisms, is clearly the right choice.

You know it’s crucial to put your best foot forward whether you’re making a first impression, landing a contract, or showing up every day ready to innovate. What you might not know is that “fake it ‘til you make it” is not the way to get off on the right foot. Actually, there’s nothing like being holistically well to truly empower your best self. Research shows high well-being boosts your confidence, communication skills, and concentration. It’s the secret sauce to success. And while well-being definitely has a physical component, its mental and social dimensions are often neglected. Improving your mental health actually has the greatest effect on your overall well-being—and social health follows not too far behind. So make time to meditate, catch up with friends and mentors, and strive to keep learning. Your mental and social health will thank you, and you’ll be putting your best foot forward in no time.
