“Aftermath_Catalonia in Venice, Architecture beyond Architects” is the name of the exhibition that represents Catalonia at the Venice Biennale of Architecture 2016. The catalan pavilion shows on this edition different projects where the architecture has improved the public space’s quality and the life of their citizens enhancing the common good and not the individual one.
The curatorship carried out by Jaume Prat, Jelena Prokopljevic & Isaki Lacuesta gives meaning to the works in which all of them have in common its execution on the public space. That is why people is the main focus on each architecture, whether squares, auditoriums or apartments among others. As well as the exhibition has been formalized through the cinema to reflect as a realistic point of view the day life of all the spaces, the concept and the graphic identity wants to communicate the idea through layers superposition. Three levels of information that, as the commissioners explain, interconnecting the three landscapes that integrate the architecture: the projectual, the territory or context where the projects are based and the human or the society. In such a way, the territory landscape (as a background) is shaped with a texture which comes from the image of the architecture as a hotspot, the medium layer represents the architecture through the word: “AFTERMATH” composed by the more representative iconografies of each work and finally, the third layer explains the flow of people who interacts with the building. As a result, we get a map full of flows. Different posters that differ according with the shape of each architecture and the physical movement of people. A concept that links the functionality of the architecture works with graphics.
