The Watsonville Aggies travel baseball team has been selected to compete in the 16U Mickey Mantle World Series in Waterbury, Conn., a 12-team tournament scheduled for Wednesday through Aug. 1.
The Aggies, which consists of players from Santa Cruz, Watsonville, Hollister and Morgan Hill, went undefeated at the AABC NorCal Qualifier at Hartnell College and CSU Monterey Bay, including one game where they fielded just eight players. That victory won them entrance into the West Regional Qualifier in West Covina, which they won to qualify for the World Series.
Santa Cruz County players include: pitcher Derek Estrada Haro of St. Francis High, shortstop and outfielder Jackson Dudek of Soquel High and Anthony Karagiannopoulos of Santa Cruz High.

Buona Sera finishes Pac Cup >> The Buona Sera, which hails out of the Santa Cruz Yacht Club, finished the Pacific Cup in second place in its division, according to the latest race reports. The Santa Cruz 70 completed the race from San Francisco to Hawaii in 7 days, 4 hours, 50 minutes and 6 seconds.
Pyewacket, an Andrews 70, finished first in 07:01:50:07.
Double Espresso and Aquavit, both of the SCYC, had yet to finish the race.
Double Espresso, an Olson 30, was third in its division and 155 nautical miles from finishing, while Aquavit, a Jeanneau 42i P, was third in the cruising division and 169 nautical miles from reaching Hawaii.
High school baseball
O’Boy, Blair named to all-state team >> Aptos senior Jack O’Boy and San Lorenzo Valley junior Ian Blair earned second-team, all-state honors from Cal-Hi Sports for players at medium sized schools.
O’Boy, a catcher who will play for UC Davis next season, batted .434 in 25 games with 22 runs and 13 RBIs. He had eight doubles, two triples and three home runs for the Mariners (13-12).
Blair, an outfielder, batted .446 in 22 games with 24 runs and nine RBIs. He stole 11 bases for the Cougars (14-10).
Pro baseball
McGehee extends streak to 13 >> Santa Cruz native Casey McGehee was 2-for-4 to extend his hit streak to 13 games as Triple-A Toledo beat to host Norfolk 5-2 in the teams’ International League game.
The Soquel High alum, who is batting .330, also scored a run, his 47th of the season.
Torres lowers ERA >> Milwaukee relief pitcher Carlos Torres, a Watsonville native, threw two shutout innings in the Brewers’ 5-2 loss to the visiting Chicago Cubs.
The Aptos alum didn’t walk any batters, allowed one hit and struck out two. He lowered his ERA to a season-low 3.02 in 47 2/3 innings of work.
Golf
Etow, Larson qualify for NCGA Am >> Aptos’ Sean Etow and Santa Cruz’s Jonny Larson qualified for the NCGA Amateur Match Play Championship at Spyglass Hill Golf Course on Aug. 15-19.
Larson shot 77 to earn the final spot in qualifying at Coyote Creek Golf Club in Morgan Hill.
Etow shot 3-over-par 75 during qualifying at Del Monte Golf Course in Pebble Beach. Santa Cruz’s Deane Rinaldi, a sophomore at Loyola Marymount University, narrowly missed advancing, shooting 77. Scotts Valley’s Jake Haselden, a sophomore at UC San Diego, shot 78. Santa Cruz’s Ryker Barnes shot 80.
Other locals included Gregg Bargas (88) and David Morgan (97).
Brumbaugh opens with 75 >> Jennifer Brumbaugh shot 3-over-par 75 in the first round of the Symetra Tour’s Firekeepers Casino Hotel Championship in Battle Creek, Mich.,
The Scotts Valley High and San Jose State alumna is tied for 108th. She tees off on the 10th tee in Saturday’s second round at 6:20 a.m.
Surfing
Hays ousted from Supergirl Pro >> Santa Cruz’s Autumn Hays was eliminated in Round 3 of World Surf League’s Paul Mitchell Supergirl Pro Women’s QS6000 in Huntington Beach.
Hays (7.30) finished in third behind Australia’s Rubee Reents (8.67) and Spain’s Lucia Martino (8.00) and ahead of American Kloee Openshaw (4.50).
Hays took second in her Round 2 heat to extend her day. American Savannah Bradley (8.16) took first in the heat. Hays posted a 5.50 total, beating out American’s Nicole Fulford (5.10) and Kayla Durden (4.90).
Pairings announced for U.S. Open of Surfing >> Pairings were announced for the U.S. Open of Surfing in Huntington Beach.
Three locals are slated to compete in the event. Santa Cruz’s John Mel will compete in Heat 14 of Round 1 of the Men’s Pro Junior on Sunday. Santa Cruz’s Nic Hdez will compete in Heat 6 of Round 1 in the Men’s Qualifying Series 10,000 on Monday. Santa Cruz’s Autumn Hays will compete in Heat 2 of Round 1 in the Women’s Pro Junior on Wednesday.
