How Job Seekers are Using Glassdoor

Glassdoor has become a key component of today's job search process, which is why it's important to have a good grasp on how candidates are using Glassdoor. Glassdoor job seekers aren't run-of-the-mill candidates-they are highly engaged and well-researched.

As an employer, it's essential to understand how candidates use Glassdoor so that you can best incorporate Glassdoor into your company's recruitment marketing strategy.

How job seekers are using Glassdoor

Candidates use Glassdoor for a myriad of different reasons. Candidates on Glassdoor do their homework to find a job and company they'll love. So, they are looking at basic information about your company, benefits, salaries, and of course: employee reviews.

According to a 2016 Glassdoor U.S. Site Survey, the majority of candidates read six reviews before forming an opinion about a company and 70 percent of people now look to reviews before they make career decisions. Candidates today increasingly treat a job search like an online shopping experience. In addition to reviews, candidates want to know basic information about your business and what makes your company a great place to work.

Once candidates reach the interview stage, they'll be doing very focused research to learn as much as they can about your company's expectations, work style and interview process. Like preparing for an exam, they want to know as much about the subject matter so they can ace it. After interviewing, candidates may leave reviews on Glassdoor about their interview experience, including level of difficulty, and the questions asked.

How employers can reach these candidates

Are you looking to engage with these candidates who are using Glassdoor to research your company? Here are some quick tips to get more involved with these job seekers:

  1. Respond to reviews. According to a 2016 U.S. Site Survey, 62% say their perception of a company improves after seeing an employer respond to a review. Learn more about why responding to reviews is so important in our newest eBook, A Step-by-Steph Guide for Employers: How to Respond to Reviews.
  2. Update your company information. Ensure the company information on your company's Glassdoor profile is up-to-date, including your name, number of employees and website.
  3. Update your benefits information. Make sure all of the benefits (and perks) your company offers are reflected on your profile-candidates want to see what they can expect if they take a job at your organization. Showcase this information in text on your profile in addition to in photos.
  4. Solicit feedback! When you follow up with candidates who interview at your organization, ask them to leave interview reviews on your Glassdoor profile. This will help you improve your candidate experience as well as give other candidates helpful advice on what it's really like to interview at your company.
