Sarah Shimomura made the most of her second chance at the USA Swimming Olympic Trials in Omaha, Neb., on Tuesday. The Santa Cruz resident and Archbishop Mitty alumna placed 67th out of 105 competitors in the preliminary heats of the 200-meter freestyle with a time of 2 minutes, 3.23 seconds. That was 7.63 seconds behind the top trials time set by Olympic gold medalist Katie Ledecky.

On the meet’s psych sheet, Shimomura had been seeded 87th with a qualifying time of 2:01.94.

On Monday, Shimomura clocked a 4:21.38 in the 400 free and finished 81st out of 101 entrants.

Water polo

3 Soquel players earn All-American recognition >> Soquel senior Taylor Thorson, junior Hannah Henry and junior Viviane King-Adas received All-American recognition by KAI~Sports, a website that focuses on girls water polo in California and Hawaii.

Thorson, a hole set and two-time MVP of the Monterey Bay League’s Gabilan Division, was named to the 16-player third team for California and Hawaii, while the keeper Henry — last season’s Junior of the Year in the MBL-G — was selected to the fourth team. Adas, a two-meter defender and all-MBL-G selection, received honorable mention.

Lifeguarding

Coffey to compete in Japan >> Santa Cruz’s Ben Coffey is traveling to Japan to compete in the Sanyo International Lifesaving Cup.

Coffey, a Santa Cruz City Lifeguard and Junior Guards instructor, will be one of 10 to represent Team USA. Other countries competing include Australia, New Zealand, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Canada and Japan.

Coffey is expected to compete in Beach Relay, Board Race, Rescue Tube Rescue and Ocean Man Relay (board paddle leg) events.

Competition begins Saturday and will continue through Sunday.

Little League

Aptos 12, Pajaro Valley 1 >> The Aptos 10-year-old All-Stars improved to 3-0 in pool play following their victory against Pajaro Valley in the District 39 Tournament at Scotts Valley Little League.

Aptos’ Matt Hood hit a two-run home run, Ryan Smith finished with a single, double and triple, and Wyatt Wolsfeld was 2-for-2. Pitcher Kevin Hamlyn tossed three innings of relief, recording eight strikeouts for Aptos, which will play Live Oak on Friday at 5:30 p.m.

Reece Hamalainen was 2-for-3 with a double and a triple for Pajaro Valley (0-3), which will play Santa Cruz National on Thursday at 5:30 p.m.

Pro baseball

Torres tosses two scoreless innings >> Watsonville native and Milwaukee Brewers right-handed pitcher Carlos Torres tossed two scoreless innings of relief against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

The Aptos High alum gave up one hit and one walk while striking out three. He lowered his ERA to 3.46.

The Dodgers defeated the Brewers, 6-5.

McGehee with five-game hit streak >> Santa Cruz’s Casey McGehee batted 1-for-3 with a walk in Triple-A Toledo’s 3-0 loss to Norfolk in International League play. The Soquel High alum has a five-game hit streak.

McGehee is batting .311 on the season.

Gilbert gets no-decision >> San Lorenzo Valley alum and Single-A Lakewood left-handed pitcher Tyler Gilbert tossed six innings in a no-decision against the Hagerstown Suns on Monday.

Gilbert allowed three earned runs on four hits, striking out four. The Blueclaws defeated the Suns, 6-5.

Gilbert has a 4.14 ERA.
