Following last year’s successful swim from Gozo to Malta, Michelle Muscat raised the stakes today as she swam from Marsaskala to the Grand Harbour in Valletta.

Waiting for her arrival on shore were her husband and their twin daughters, carrying a bouquet of white roses.

She was last year joined by a number of swimmers from the Malta Special Olympics team, but this year, the 42-year-old swam on her own, with a rosary bead tied to her wrist.

Muscat – wife of Prime Minister Joseph Muscat – had a bigger challenge as she swam closer to the coast, facing stronger water currents.

The swim started at 3.30pm and she passed in front of Smart City, Fort Rinella, Fort Ricasoli on way to the Grand Harbour, where she arrived shortly after 6.30pm.

All donations from the charity swim will go towards Marigold Foundation.
