NetflixNetflix knows how you watch TV. The streaming giant released new data they discovered, called The Binge Scale, and discovered which types of shows people tend to plow through and which they're more inclined to take their time with while still binging.
To get their data, Netflix examined the global viewing of more than 100 serialized TV shows across more than 190 countries. When viewers are focusing on finishing a series, they watch more than two hours a day to complete a season, Netflix said.
Shows like Sense8, Orphan Black and The 100 are more likely to be binged quicker, and horror and thriller shows like The Walking Dead and the Gillian Anderson and Jamie Dornan show The Fall are also more likely to be devoured quickly. Dramedies, like Orange Is the New Black, are also more likely to be consumed in large quantities Netflix found. However, "irreverent" comedies like Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and Arrested Development tend to be viewed at a slower pace.
TV shows like The Good Wife, House of Cards and Bloodline, as well as period dramas like Mad Men also tend to be savored by viewers. Superhero dramas like Jessica Jones and The Flash fall in the middle between devour and savor.
So, the more action-packed and flashy the show, the quicker people binge. The shows the require more thought and attention are savored by viewers.
"As The Binge Scale indicates, the viewing experience of a series can range from the emotional to the thought-provoking," Cindy Holland, vice president of original content at Netflix, said in a statement. "Netflix helps you to find a series to binge no matter your mood or occasion, and the freedom to watch that series at your own pace—whether that's to appreciate the drama of Bloodline or power through Orange is the New Black."
