KickAssTorrents even harder to shutdown, now available on Tor network

The popular torrent download site KickAssTorrents, which is normally available at kat.cr, can now also be reached using the Tor browser. By also making the site available on the Tor network, the site has a backup location and becomes available to users for whom the site is normally blocked.

KickAssTorrents can be reached through a domain with the .onion extension which only works through Tor powered software. More specifically, the website is hosted on the Tor address http://lsuzvpko6w6hzpnn.onion.

While the site is available on Tor, torrent downloads still go through the regular internet. This means downloading from KickAssTorrents, is not anonymous, for that e.g. a VPN is still required.

The .onion version should, above all, be considered a backup of the regular website. Websites on the Tor network are harder to shut down as Tor is considered to be relatively anonymous.

Like many other sites that are considered illegal, KickAssTorrents frequently changes domains. The site changes address about every 6 months to make it harder for copyright organisations to shut the website down.

The torrent site joins the ranks of Facebook which also has its own .onion address. This should allow users in countries where the website is blocked or censored to get access to the social network.

KickAssTorrents is blocked in the United Kingdom and Finland (According to our user snug, the site is not blocked in Finland, thanks for reporting!)
