Nominees for the Class of 2016 Boys Athlete of the Year

Eds. note: Vote below the biographies to help select the finalists for the Class of 2016 Boys Athlete of the Year. Only senior athletes are considered for Athlete of the Year nominations, which are provided by school athletic directors, coaches and Herald Writers. Voting ends Monday, June 13 at 2 p.m. In addition to athletic accomplishments, academics, community involvement and character are asked to be considered when nominating and taken into account when the final winner is selected.

For the girls nominees, click here. (Five of the six finalists for each gender will be decided by a fan vote with the sixth being decided by Herald staffers. The Athlete of the Year winners will be chosen from the six finalists by The Herald’s writers and editors.)

Aiden Waite | Archbishop Murphy

Waite was a three-year starter for the football and baseball team. He was a starting guard on the football team that advanced to the 2A state semifinals and was awarded second-team all-league honors. Waite was also a team captain and the starting catcher for the baseball team. He hit .360 as a senior and was selected as a second-team all-league performer. He is a member of ASB and visible on campus in a variety of leadership roles and carries a 3.68 GPA.

Nathan Beamer | Arlington

Beamer was a standout in cross country and track for the Eagles. He was team captain in both sports and placed second in both the 3A state cross country meet and the 1,600-meters at the state track meet as a senior. He holds the Arlington cross country program’s school record, as well as the 800, 1,600 and 3,200 records.

Cameron McGrath | Cascade

McGrath is a four-year letterman in both basketball and baseball. He helped the Bruins’ basketball team reach the state regional round in both his junior and senior seasons and helped lead the baseball team to the state quarterfinals as a sophomore and a senior. He will graduate with a 3.945 GPA and has taken numerous AP and honors classes during his four years of high school.

David Perekopskiy | Cedar Park Christian-Mountlake Terrace

Perekopskiy was a starter on both the basketball and soccer teams. He earned all-league honors in soccer. He also participates in drama and is a high-level student in the classroom.

Cody Banks | Cedarcrest

Banks played football and basketball for the Red Wolves. He was a first-team all-conference infielder for the baseball team this season and helped the Red Wolves to a second-place finish at the 2A state tournament. He plans on playing baseball at the next level, but is as of yet undecided on what college he will attend. He carries a 3.262 GPA.

Mason McKenzie | Darrington

McKenzie is a three-time state wrestling champion with a combined record of 104-13 in his four years of competition. He placed second in the state as a freshman before winning the state title as a sophomore, junior and senior in the 220-pound weight class. He was named a first-team all-league offensive lineman and linebacker as a sophomore and junior and named MVP of the football team as a senior. He served his community in the Oso mudslide relief efforts and assisted for four years coaching the Darrington Middle School wrestling team.

Spencer Schultz | Edmonds-Woodway

Schultz earned three varsity letters in football and four in wrestling at Edmonds-Woodway. He was selected as a captain in both football and wrestling and was a first-team All-Wesco 3A South middle linebacker. He is a two-time placer at the 3A Mat Classic with a fifth-place finish as a senior, where he helped the Warriors take fourth as a team. Schultz holds a 3.83 GPA and will pursue a degree in economics at the University of Washington.

Nick Blair | Everett

Blair is a three-year letter winner in both football and track. He recently won his first individual track state championship at the 3A state meet, placing first in the shot put. He also placed fifth in the discus. Blair will continue his football career at Eastern Washington Unviersity this fall and holds a 3.617 GPA.

Justin Guffey | Glacier Peak

Guffey was a three-year letterman in both football and basketball. He also competed in track and tried out for golf for the first time in his high school career as a senior. He a first-team All-Wesco 3A South selection on offense and defense for the football team and a captain on the basketball team. He is a member of the National Honor Society and carries a 3.9 GPA.

Ryan Elvrom | Granite Falls

Elvrom played basketball and baseball for the Tigers and was known as a quiet leader. He was named an all-league infielder for the baseball team as a senior.

Sawyer Hawk | Highland Christian

Hawk was a standout basketball player for the Knights.

Dylan Roy | Jackson

Roy participated in football and track for the Timberwolves. He carries a 3.5 GPA, volunteers with a local church and plays the guitar in his spare time. He holds the school record in the 110-meter hurdles and is third all-time in the 300-meter hurdles. He also started every game for the football team as a senior.

Nate Shubert | Kamiak

Shubert, who has a football scholarship to Idaho State University, is a three-year letterman in football and basketball, two-year letterman in baseball and earned his first letter in track as a senior. He was a first-team All-Wesco 4A selection in as a tight end in both 2014 and 2015 and has been selected to participate in this year’s annual East/West All-Star game, which features some of the best senior talent in the state. He takes several AP classes, carries a 3.73 GPA and is involved in numerous school and community activities.

Koa Wilkins | King’s

Wilkins was a member of the Knights’ back-to-back state championship basketball teams and also quarterbacked King’s to the 1A state football championship game in 2015. He was voted first-team all-league in basketball and football as a senior and will attend the University of Idaho where he plans to continue his football career. Wilkins was also the starting center fielder and leadoff hitter for the baseball team.

Sam Linscott | Lakewood

Lincott played football, basketball and baseball for the Cougars. He caught 31 passes for 673 yards and six touchdowns in his first year playing high school football as a senior. His 673 receiving yards led the Cascade Conference and is the fifth highest total in school history. He also played in all 20 games in both the basketball and baseball seasons. He batted .404 with 10 RBI for the Cougars this spring.

Jacob Eason | Lake Stevens

Eason is one of the most decorated football players to ever come out of Snohomish County. He was awarded the Gatorade National Player of the Year award as well as the Gatorade Washington State Player of the Year award for his outstanding senior season. He was also a U.S. Army All-American. Eason, who met his graduation requirements early to enroll at the University of Georgia where he attends on a full athletic scholarship, is the Lake Stevens’ Cliff Gillies award recipient and graduated with a 3.56 GPA. He also played basketball and baseball in his first three years of high school before focusing on football and graduating early as a senior.

Jared Simbulan | Lynnwood

Simbulan was a team captain in tennis and teamed up with Gary Wu to go 16-0 this season playing No. 1 doubles for the Royals. He has earned two letters in both basketball and tennis in his four years of high school and received the Coaches’ Award in basketball as a senior. Academically, Simbulan carries a 3.5833 GPA and is a member of the National Honor Society. He was named Lynnwood High School Student of the Month in September and May of his senior year.

Kevin Villalobos | Mariner

Villalobos led the basketball team in scoring the past two seasons and is a two-time first-team All-Wesco 4A selection. He will continue his basketball career at Edmonds Community College and carries a 3.0 GPA.

Troy Woodruff | Marysville Getchell

Woodruff participated in football, wrestling and track for the Chargers. He was voted a second-team all-league selection in football and a team captain in both wrestling and football. He carries a 3.892 GPA.

Josh Bevan | Marysville Pilchuck

Bevan is a four-year letterman in cross country, three-year letterman in basketball and earned his first letter in track as a senior. He found the most success on the basketball court, where he was an all-league first-team guard and named to The Herald’s All-Area first-team. He also led the Wesco 3A North in scoring. Bevan carries a 3.2 GPA.

Harrison White | Meadowdale

White competed in football, basketball and track and field all four years of his high school career. He was selected as a captain in both basketball and track as a senior. White was named first-team All-Wesco 3A South in basketball this year and has been a four-time second-team All-Wesco selection in track. He plans to study political science at Western Oregon University where he will attend on a football scholarship.

Aidan Cain | Monroe

Cain was a three-year starter for the football team on the offensive line, earning second-team All-Wesco honors in each of those seasons. He was also a co-captain for the football team in his senior season. Cain also participated in track for the past three seasons, throwing discus and shot put. Academically, Cain holds a 3.792 GPA and has made the honor roll every semester of his high school career. He has also been involved in numerous community service projects over the past four years.

Daniel Sullivan | Mount Vernon

Sullivan played 12 seasons of sports in his high school career, competing in cross country, swimming and track. He is the Salutatorian for his class with a 3.99 GPA and is a member of the Future Business Leaders of America, marching band and jazz band. He will attend Oregon State University to study engineering.

Mikey Jenson | Mountlake Terrace

Jenson played several different positions for the football team during his high school career, including quarterback as a senior. He also participates in golf and was a state participant for three straight years.

Dyllan Harris | Oak Harbor

Harris earned four varsity letters in basketball and three in football. As a senior, Harris was a first-team All-Wesco 3A North player for both offense and defense in football and was also a first-team selection in basketball.

Grant Heisey | Shorecrest

Heisey is the first swimmer in Shorecrest history to qualify for state in every event. He won two individual events at state as a senior and helped the Scots take second as a team. He carries a 3.919 GPA.

Ronnie Gary | Shorewood

Gary was a two-time first-team All-Wesco 3A South selection as a wide receiver and caught 14 touchdowns as a senior. He was also selected as the team’s MVP in two different seasons. He excels in track and field and holds the school record in the high jump with leap of 6 feet, 10 inches. He placed third at this year’s 3A state meet in that event. Gary carries a 3.0 GPA and will attend Central Washington University to play football and track.

Charlie Patterson | South Whidbey

Patterson played football, basketball and baseball for the Falcons. He was a first-team all-conference in football in 2014, second-team all-conference in baseball in 2014 and 2015 and first-team all-conference in baseball this year as a senior. Patterson carries a 3.93 GPA.

Kobe McDaniel | Snohomish

McDaniel was a second-team All-Wesco 4A quarterback for the Panthers as a senior and helped lead the team to the postseason for the first time under head coach Kai Smalley. McDaniel also played basketball and baseball for the Panthers and boasts a 3.4 GPA.

Isaac Olson | Stanwood

Olson helped lead the Spartans to the district basketball playoffs three times and to the state tournament twice. He is a three-time letterman in basketball, baseball and cross country. He was all-league honorable mention in basketball as a senior and a second-team all-league infielder in baseball as a junior and a senior. Academically, he has taken several AP physics and calculus classes as well as competed in Knowledge Bowl and carries a 3.6 GPA.

Tyler Morris | Sultan

Morris, who was one of the top scorers in the state, was named to the all-state and first-team all-league in basketball. He was also voted team MVP and recognized by the Snohomish County Officials for his leadership and sportsmanship multiple times during his senior season.

Robert Miles Jr. | Tulalip Heritage

Miles Jr. played football and basketball all four years of his high school career and was one of the best players on both teams all four years. Academically, Miles is known for being a good student and respectful in the classroom.
