Village at Lexington Gardens to Transform Newtown's Shopping District

Two restaurants, a day spa, a dress shop, a jeweler, a psychiatrist's office, Dental Associates and other retailers will lease the new space

NEWTOWN, CT — After closing unexpectedly in 2011, Lexington Gardens nursery and garden center is now being transformed into a multibuilding commercial complex.

Lexington Gardens, located at 32 Church Hill Road, had been a mecca for gardeners since opening in 1973, housing plants, knick-knacks, gift items and all things horticultural in their 40,000 square-foot facility.

Thomas Johnson took over the business in 1983 and devoted himself to growing and selling a wide variety of plants ranging from tropical types, such as orchids, hibiscus and cactus, to the azaleas, dogwoods, lilacs, perennial flowers and mums typically grown in New England.

In November 2008, Johnson, seeking to retire, sold the business to Cinocolo, who formed an entity, SLC Properties LLP, to own it.

The property, including its building complex and 5-acre site in a business zone, was appraised at $2,226,293, with an assessed value of $1,586,400, according to town records in 2011.

Now known as The Village at Lexington Gardens, the 61,000 square feet of space will include seven buildings at a cost of $10 million to $12 million by developers Mesa General Contractors of New Milford, according to Westfair Publications.

New businesses expect to open in October or November and a Grand Opening is planned for December, Westfair stated, continuing, "it represents the largest commercial redevelopment in Newtown in two decades."

The new development will include two restaurants, Dental Associates of Connecticut, Newtown Savings Bank, a day spa, dress shop, jeweler, psychiatrist’s office and other retailers, the publication reports.

The Village at Lexington Gardens' website states that the property is "Newtown's newest premier shopping destination."
