Glacier Peak softball drops opener, wins 3 straight before falling in loser-out game

The Glacier Peak softball team lost its first game at the 3A state tournament Friday afternoon.

Then the Grizzlies (20-9 overall) won three straight games and came within a game of playing for third place before falling to Everett 5-2 in a loser-out game Saturday afternoon.

“I’m so proud of this team, just from where we started at the beginning of the year to finishing (how we did),” said Glacier Peak head coach Caitlin Nies. “We didn’t get that first win in the tournament but we kept fighting and came out and won three more games.”

Glacier Peak graduates just two seniors, albeit two key contributors, from this year’s squad. Catcher Corall Hjert, who was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBI in the Grizzlies’ 7-3 victory over Lake Washington Saturday morning, and Abigail Doney, who hit a home run in Glacier Peak’s state opener against Mt. Spokane, played their final games for the Grizzlies in Lacey.

The duo helped Glacier Peak build a reputation as a team that’s never out of a game.

“Just our ability to keep fighting when we get down. We’ve played a lot of games where we were down initially and came back,” Nies said. “It’s just a really steady group of girls that keep competing and I’d say that’s my most proud trait of this team and something that I hope we can continue next year.”
