Friday Box Office: 'Captain America 3' Surpassing 'Dark Knight Rises' As 'Angry Birds' Stays Afloat

This article is more than 7 years old.

The Angry Birds Movie earned $5 million on its second Friday, a drop of 53%. That brings the film's domestic total up to $52m domestic. We should expect a $19.4m Fri-Sun (-47%) weekend and a $25.755m (-37%) holiday haul. That will give the Sony animated feature a $73.5m eleven-day total, or about its domestic budget. It should be over $220m worldwide by Monday, so yeah it's going to be one of the biggest video game movies ever. Your move, Warcraft.

Captain America: Civil War earned another $4 million on its fourth Friday (-53%) to bring its domestic cume to $360m. It should pass Deadpool ($362m) today to be the year's biggest domestic champion and will likely earn around $16.8m (-49%) over the Fri-Sun weekend and $21.7m (-39%) over the holiday for an over/under $380m domestic total. It should flirt with $400m by the end of the next weekend or soon after. Regarding worldwide totals, since it was at $1.073b on Thursday and earned another $4m domestically on Friday, it topped The Dark Knight Rises globally ($1.084b) yesterday or will today as it moves its way up the charts with (at this point) predictable ease.

Sadly, Neighbors 2 took a brutal hit yesterday, as the comedy sequel dropped 68% on its second Friday for a $2.8 million gross. The Seth Rogen/Zac Efron/Rose Byrne/Chloe Moretz sequel should make around $10.9m (-54%) over the Fri-Mon frame and bring its cume up to $40m domestic. Disney's The Jungle Book earned around $1.8m (-34%) on Friday, the best hold for a wide release yesterday, for a likely $10.4m (-14%) holiday haul and new $341m cume. That puts it past Alice in Wonderland ($334m) and past Zootopia (which will make around $1.25m for the weekend for a new $336m total).

And Shane Black's The Nice Guys didn't get a ton of holiday traction, earning $1.76 million (-55%) to bring its cume to $17.124m. Expect an $8m holiday weekend (-35%) and a $23.4m eleven-day cume.  Next weekend will tell the tale although Warner has Me Before You opening next Friday. Sony's official adult counterprogramming of the month, Money Monster, is holding up a bit better. The Jodie Foster-directed thriller earned around $1.1m (-44%) on Friday for a likely $5.4m holiday haul and a $35.1m cume. The George Clooney/Julia Roberts drama cost $28m to produce.

Love & Friendship expanded to 493 theaters this weekend and earned around $668k (+340%) for its trouble. The well-reviewed Whit Stillman comedy, a Jane Austin adaptation starring Kate Beckinsale, should make around $3.5m (+483%) over the holiday weekend for a new $4.563m. Also expanding this weekend is The Lobster, which earned around $213k (+76%) in 119 locations for a likely $955k holiday haul. That will give the superb Colin Farrell/Rachel Weisz comedy a $2.173m cume. The Darkness should make around $934k (-62%) on its third holiday-inflated weekend for a $10m domestic cume, while The Meddler should have $699k (-20%) on 420 screens for a new $3.14m cume by Monday night.

And that's enough holdover Friday news for now.
