MARYSVILLE — Lynnwood’s Jordyn Edwards and Marysville Getchell’s Kiarra Green lingered at the podium after receiving their first- and second-place awards Friday at the Class 3A District 1 meet at Quil Ceda Stadium.
That’s not unusual. Track and field competitors are often friends with one another. But in this case, it wasn’t friendship — it was family.
“It’s a whole big family reunion here to see this race,” said Edwards, a senior who is a first cousin of the freshman Green. “We’re really close. We were laughing at the blocks while we were getting ready and it was awesome to race against her.”
The two cousins concluded one of the closest races of the day. Edwards edged her younger cousin by two-tenths of a second in the 200-meter dash as her time of 25.62 topped Green’s 25.82. Both advance to next week’s Class 3A state meet.
“I’m so proud of her for what she’s accomplished and she has so much more potential,” Edwards said. “That was a very intense race for me because I really wanted that my senior year. I know I had a good start and I was right next to her for a little bit. I knew that I wanted it so bad so I pushed my body today to the max in my race.”
Edwards won both the 200 and the 400 and ran legs on Lynnwood’s victorious 1,600-meter and 800-meter relay teams as the Royals won the team title with 102 points. Glacier Peak was just behind at 97 points, while Stanwood placed third at 87.5.
Mountlake Terrace’s Chinne Okoronkwo won the pole vault, long jump and triple jump. Her triple jump distance of 42-73/4 was more than six feet better than runnerup Rylee Weg of Ferndale, and would have placed third in the boys competition.
While Edwards and her team won narrow victories, Arlington’s Nathan Beamer won the 3,200 by more than 10 seconds as he helped lead the Eagles to the boys team title with 121.5 points to Shorewood’s 111. Glacier Peak was a distant third with 76.
“You have to stay focused out there,” said Beamer, who also won the 1,600 on Wednesday. “It was a good race. It was really windy out there.”
From his spot atop the podium Beamer found his cheering section and waved demonstratively as his name was announced. It was something he began doing last year at districts, he said.
“This is my favorite time of night, running two miles at night with everything,” Beamer said. “All the other events are done and everyone is cheering for you.”
Shorewood’s Ronnie Gary won the triple jump to go along with the high jump and long jump titles he won Wednesday. Nicholas Blair of Everett won the discus to add to the shot put title he took home Wednesday.
Skyler Widman was another multiple winner as the Shorewood winner edged Glacier Peak’s Dexter Carter in both the 100 and the 200.
