Disney’s “Captain America: Civil War” opened on unprecedented 1,989 screens on Wednesday. It earned $28.7 million from 3.93 million admissions over 5 days and accounted for 91% of the total weekend box office revenue.
It is the biggest non-Korean opening and the biggest Marvel opening in history, narrowly ahead of “The Avengers: Age of Ultron,” which earned $28.5 million from 3.74 million admissions in 2014.
Korean thriller “Time Renegades” dropped to second after three weekends. The CJ Entertainment release scored $632,000 between Friday and Sunday for a total of $8.03 million.
Disney’s long-running animated feature “Zootopia” dropped to third, earning $543,000 between Friday and Sunday. The picture now stands on $31.4 million after ten weeks.
Korean sex comedy “The Last Ride” took fourth, scoring $216,000 between Friday and Sunday for a total of $2 million after two weekends. Korean drama “Love, Lies” earned $135,900 between Friday and Sunday, for a total of $3.14 million after three weekends, while “Insane” earned $136,000 between Friday and Sunday, extending its total to $7.66 million after four weekends.
Mystery thriller “Secret in Their Eyes” opened in eighth with $104,000 between Wednesday and Friday. “Under the Sun,” a Russian and North Korean government-funded documentary about life in North Korea, opened in ninth with $62,400 over five days.
