Decimate Even The Toughest Grout Grime With These DIY Cleaning Solutions

The biggest problem with bathrooms? They get dirty. Fast. Especially when it comes to the grout. The grooves between tiles are the perfect size for collecting and trapping dirt and grime. Plus, it can be a real pain trying to get grout to look as good as it did when you first installed it. So what can you do? Turns out there are some great cleaning solutions you can create using basic ingredients you likely already have in your home! They’re perfect for tackling grimy grout.

If you don’t have a serious grime issue yet then you won’t need to break out the big guns. To clean a light amount of dirt out of grout all you’ll need is a fresh sponge, hot water, and baking soda! Simply moisten the sponge with hot water, dip it into baking soda, and scrub at the soiled areas of your grout and tile. After you’ve created a nice coating of baking soda you’ll want to rinse the sponge and then wipe away the excess baking soda! Voila! Your tile and grout will be sparkling clean again.

Let’s say the job is a bit tougher, though. If you have some dirt that won’t come off with baking soda alone then it’s time to increase the firepower with the addition of distilled white vinegar. For this process you’ll want to first dampen the sponge with the vinegar. Wipe the vinegar-infused sponge along the most affected areas and then immediately sprinkle baking soda in the wake of the sponge. Get right to scrubbing with either the sponge or a brush! You’ll really want to use some elbow grease at this point to break up even the most compacted grime. Now wipe down the area with water and you’re set! This solution is perfect for that grout where the toilet connects to the floor.

For the most serious of grout and tile cleaning you’ll want to get a little more industrial about it. This is where borax and super washing soda come in. Mix a 1/4 cup of baking soda with 1 tablespoon of super washing soda and then add 1 tablespoon of borax. Lightly stir these ingredients together. Next you’ll add 1 1/2 tablespoons of liquid dish soap. Stirring these will create a thick paste similar to gritty toothpaste. You’ll definitely want to wear some protective gloves for this next part. Take the paste and spread it over the seriously grimy grout. Soak the sponge in vinegar and ring it out so that it’s not dripping. Now scrub your heart out! Once you’ve sufficiently scrubbed the grout you’ll want to use warm water and a rag to wipe up the excess paste. It could take several tries to get all the paste up. You’ll be amazed at the results!
