The Basics: The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is investigating 2013 and 2014 Ford F-150s with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engines after receiving 33 reports of brake failure. Over 420,000 vehicles could be affected.
The Problem: Brake failure, which repair facilities diagnosed as "brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder to the brake booster," causing the master cylinder to fail. A wide range of symptoms were reported, including complete brake failure, illumination of the brake warning lamp, or low fluid level in the master cylinder without any signs of leakage.
Injuries/Deaths: None reported, but there have been four crashes blamed on the problem.
The fix: None yet. Issue is being investigated by NHTSA.

All of the reports involve F-150 trucks equipped with 3.5L engines, with an estimated 420,000 units sold in the United States representing approximately 36 percent of MY 2013-2014 F-150 sales. The complaints allege symptoms of brake pedal going to the floor with complete loss of brake effectiveness, brake warning lamp illumination, and/or low or empty master cylinder reservoir fluid level with no visible leakage. Several complaints allege repair facilities diagnosed the problem as brake fluid leaking from the master cylinder to the brake booster. Thirty-one (31) of the reports were received in the last 12 months, including 20 in the last 7 months. Four complaints allege that the alleged defect resulted in collisions. A Preliminary Evaluation has been opened to assess the scope, frequency, and safety-related consequences of the alleged defect.
