Okorocha commends CP

Governor Rochas Okorocha of Imo State and the National President of Nigeria Labour Congress, Ayuba Wabba have commended the state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Taiwo Lakanu, for ensuring peace and order during workers’ protests in the state.

On Wednesday, Imo State workers protested against the sacking of more than 2,500 civil servants.

Wabba noted that Lakanu demonstrated wisdom in the meeting he had with the national leadership of labour which helped to pacify the irate protesters.

He said, “Though a core Yoruba man, Lakanu preached to labour and state government the importance of peace and national unity and co-existence. He was not tribalistic. That is the kind of man the Police and this country need. His submissions created an in-road to the peace that was brokered at last.”

Similarly, Okorocha acknowledged the police commissioner’s contributions to the resolution the crisis between the workers and the state government.

“I can describe Lakanu as a peacemaker. He exhibited ingenuity during the crisis period. If he had wanted to make money in the circumstance, he would have sided one faction but he did not. He was neutral on the matter. May God see him through in his endeavours,” Okorocha said.

Lakanu told SUNDAY PUNCH he was only interested in the peace and order of the state.

He said, “It would not benefit me in any way if the crisis had lingered. If it was not quelled at that point, it would have resulted in a situation that would be unbearable. I was put off when I was told a medical doctor was shot doing their peaceful protest in the state capital on February 4. That led me to challenge the doctors to produce the shot doctor, medical report from any government hospital and extracts of the bullet but they (doctors) failed to do so.”
