The Oregon Ducks started play in the Kajikawa Classic winning their first game as Cheridan Hawkins started her season with a win against Cal Poly. Oregon Freshman Megan Kleist picked up the second win against Georgia State.

Ducks Win 12-3 Over Cal Poly Mustangs

The Oregon Ducks Softball team began the 2016 campaign on Friday at the Kajikawa Classic as they have in past seasons. However the start of 2016 means something new around the corner for this team. Mike White and the Ducks will begin the home campaign in the new Jane Sanders Stadium which replaces Howe Field. It would be important for the sixth ranked team in the country to get off to a good start and Cheridan Hawkins seemed to pick up where she left off in 2015.

Hawkins threw a complete game four hitter giving up three hits and striking out 10. Offensively it was Alyssa Gillespie who provided the hot bat of the opening game of the season going three for four from the leadoff spot and hitting two doubles in the process.

Gillespie Stays Hot In Win Over Georgia State

In the first game of the day Alyssa Gillespie started her Senior Season off right and the momentum continued in Oregon’s second game of the day(or night in this case) against Georgia State. It was a late start due to the previous game of the Kajikawa Classic running long, but that did not slow down Mike White and his team.

The Oregon Ducks Softball team opened the first day of the Tournament 2-0 and beat Georgia State 11-0. Cheridan Hawkins is the workhorse for Oregon on the mound, but the second start of the day went to Freshman Megan Kleist who gave up two hits in six innings of work. She struck out six. The competition continues on Saturday for the sixth ranked team in the nation.
