Pebble Beach Pro-Am's Richest Golf Pairings: By The Numbers

This article is more than 8 years old.

Justin Timberlake didn't get frustrated like some weekend hackers do when golfers got backed up at the Pebble Beach Pro-Am tournament. Instead he treated fans to an impromptu performance of his song "Drink You Away" after being given a guitar by well-prepared attendee in the gallery.

One can't blame Timberlake for his cheery response to slow play. After all, he's the highest-paid of the celebrities in the Pro-Am field, having made an estimated $63.5 million in 2015 according to Forbes rankings. Timberlake is teaming this week with PGA Tour pro Justin Rose, who himself cracked the list of the highest-earnings athletes last year at $20.2 million.

Timberlake and Rose are friends, have neighboring houses in the Bahamas, and are five shots off the lead midway through the pro-am portion of the event. They also make up the richest pairing involving a celebrity and pro golfer on the Monterey Peninsula this week.

Just behind them is country singer Toby Keith, who made $52 million last year, and pro partner Steve Stricker. Actor and producer Mark Wahlberg, who made $32 million last year, is part of another power pairing with Bubba Watson, a two-time Masters champion who had over $7 million in on-course winnings in 2015.

Among the other richest celebrities-pro pairings are Hockey Hall-of-Famer Wayne Gretzky and his son-in-law, Dustin Johnson, and country singer Jake Owen and Jordan Spieth, the world's No. 1 golfer.

Phil Mickelson ranked eighth among all athletes with almost $51 million in earnings last year, though the four-time Pro-Am champion doesn't have a celebrity as a partner. Rather, he's teamed with John Veihmeyer, the chairman of KPMG International, one of Lefty's biggest sponsors.

But none of the groups above comes close to being the richest overall once businessmen are factored in along with the celebrities.

That honor would go to the billionaire combo of Charles Schwab, who founded his eponymous firm, and teammate Rod Pampling. They're playing in the same group as another billionaire, Yahoo co-founder Jerry Yang and his partner, Aaron Baddeley. Schwab's net worth is currently $5.3 billion, while Yang is estimated at $1.56 billion, according to the Forbes Billionaires List.

Schwab and Yang are among eight billionaires teeing it up this week at Pebble Beach, Spyglass and the Shore Course at Monterey Peninsula Country Club.

Financier George Roberts ($4.2 billion) is the co-chairman of Kohlberg, Kravis & Roberts and is playing with former Masters champion Mike Weir. Jeremy Jacobs ($3.7 billion) is the chairman and CEO of concession giant Delaware North, which provides food, drinks and entertainment to more than 200 sports venues around the world. Jacobs is teamed with second-year PGA Tour pro Jon Curran.

Todd Wagner ($1.55 billion) is a former business partner of Mark Cuban who joined the billionaire list after selling his Web startup company to Yahoo in 1999. Now the CEO of 2929 Entertainment, Wagner is playing with a higher-profile golfer in Ian Poulter.

Ed Stack ($1.5 billion) is the chairman and CEO of Dick's Sporting Goods. His pro partner is Ken Duke.

Irish financier Dermot Desmond ($1.75 billion) is teaming with countryman Shane Lowry, while Comcast chairman and CEO Brian Roberts ($1.35 billion) is playing alongside Ryan Palmer.
