A 24-year-old Winnipeg woman allegedly led police on a chase Saturday.

Police say officers saw a black Ford Focus being driven unsafely around 3:10 a.m. Officers followed the vehicle westbound on Portage Avenue near Maryland Street as the suspect allegedly drove recklessly. The Focus driver allegedly sped and ignored traffic lights with “no regard for public safety,” said police.

The suspicious vehicle finally came to a stop near Broadway and Maryland Street, when the driver attempted to flee on foot. But police say officers managed to take the suspect into custody with the help of the canine unit.

Sarah Lynn Vermette is charged with driving while her ability to do so was impaired, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, flight from police, driving while disqualified, failing or refusing to provide a sample for drug evaluation, two counts of failing to comply with a probation order, driving with a suspended registration and driving without insurance.

She was remanded into custody.
