Back before Pokkén Tournament's global release was announced, rumors popped up regarding the game's compatibility with near-field communication technology. Nintendo recently confirmed that the rumors were true via their official website. The Wii U Pokémon brawler will accomodate every amiibo card and figure that has been released to date.
Unfortunately, sticking your fancy Lucina amiibo will not bring the blue-haired swordsman into Pokkén Tournament. Instead, each amiibo figure or card is said to unlock an exclusive in-game item. Whether these items are fashionable accessories or power-ups for the various Pokémon fighters is currently unknown. There is also no word on whether Pokkén Tournament will receive its own series of amiibo figures outside of the already-announced Shadow Mewtwo card that can be used to unlock Shadow Mewtwo before beating the game's campaign.
Pokkén Tournament is set to launch for the Nintendo Wii U next month. Gamers across the world will be able to pick it up and fight it out on March 18.
