According to Mauricio "Maestro" Herrera, there are ongoing discussions to have him face Argentine puncher Lucas 'Machine' Matthysse on May 7th as part of the big HBO Pay-Per-View undercard for Saul 'Canelo' Alvarez's defense of the WBC middleweight world title against British superstar Amir 'King' Khan.

The event is happening at the brand new T-Movile Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada.

"We are working with Golden Boy [to finalize my next fight]. They tell me that they want to make a fight with Matthysse but at 147 pounds, because he wants to go up there. I have no problem with going up to welterweight to fight," Herrera (22-5, 7 KOs) said to ESPN Deportes.

"The date told me is May 7th. That's the plan, to be on the undercard of Canelo and undoubtedly it would be great to be there, but in reality there is nothing finalized. We are just negotiating and waiting."

Herrera has not fought since July 2015, when due to a cut he could not continue in his fight with Hank Lundy and won a technical decision in his favor to capture the NABF junior welterweight title. Matthysse (37-4, 34 KOs) is coming off a welterweight bout against WBC champion Viktor Postol, who won by knockout last October.

"For me that's a dangerous fight for both of us. For me, Mathysse is not finished and he is a brave and dangerous fighter like Ruslan Provodnikov. I had asked for Ruslan but I do not know why that didn't happen and now it seems that Matthysse is [the fight]. No matter, I like the brave fighters," Herrera said.

"And it's dangerous for him because of my experience. My style is difficult for a lot of fighters. I do not have a rhythm that they can quickly adapt to. I have a good jab and that's something that very few can control."

Mauricio said that although the negotiations are just beginning, there is a good chance that he's going to fight on May 7.
