Porsgrunn, Norway-based eZ Systems, a global content management system (CMS) provider, has unveiled what company officials call its biggest platform release in more than a decade.

It released a two-layer CMS: eZ Platform, an open source core for developers, and eZ Studio, an integrated set of tools for editors and marketers.

Roland Benedetti, chief product and marketing officer for eZ Systems, told CMSWire that much like previous versions of (flagship product) eZ Publish, eZ Platform offers a flexible content model that enables content strategists to define their information architecture and to implement the "cope" process: create content once, publish it everywhere.

It also allows content publishers to "deliver content across channels and devices, whether it be responsive and adaptive websites, apps and the Internet of Things," Benedetti continued.

He added that eZ adopted the Symfony full-stack framework in 2012. The eZ Platform is also based on the full stack, which means developers can accelerate their projects and integrate any bundle in the Symfony ecosystem.

Content-Centric Sites, Apps

The open source-based eZ Platform offers a Web framework, APIs and a structured content repository for building websites and apps. It includes a redesigned user interface to manage the repository. Its predecessor, eZ Publish Platform 5.x, was also based on the Symfony full-stack framework, the PHP framework.

"EZ Platform, which serves as the core of our new enterprise solutions, delivers a level of flexibility and extensibility not found in many other CMSs," Benedetti told CMSWire. "EZ Platform’s architecture is based on rich APIs and the system is fully accessible from its remote REST API. This enables the platform to work as a traditional CMS or a headless CMS that is ready to implement Content-as-a-Service (CaaS) use cases."

Learning Opportunities

EZ Studio, a commercial solution based on eZ Platform, allows editors and marketers to manage a website or app built with eZ Platform. Features include in-page preview and editing and tools for managing landing pages such drag-and-drop blocks, automated content scheduling and customizable workflows.

The new solutions are available as a fully integrated product through the eZ Enterprise subscription. eZ also offers Cloud Services, including eZ Personalization, eZ Smart Analytics and eZ Marketing Automation.

"Many CMSs available today are not designed for the busy content editor and marketer, who are often times stuck with bloated, overly complex interfaces," Benedetti said. "With eZ Studio, we put great emphasis on providing editors a smooth UX and tools that are fine-tuned to fit the context."

He cited the example of a user is creating header text for an article and only seeing the text formatting tools appear. Benedetti also said developers will be able to customize eZ Studio to meet the needs of the organization.

"So if an editorial team wants a new drag-and-drop block for landing page management," he added, "the developers are free to create it. We anticipate members of the eZ ecosystem developing a variety of powerful functionality, in addition to what we develop for the out-of-the-box solution."

Industry Eyes

EZ Systems has carved a niche for itself in the world of Web CMS giants like Adobe and Sitecore, according to Gartner. Gartner included it as a niche player in the past two editions of its Magic Quadrant for Web Content Management

Gartner authors Mick MacComascaigh and Jim Murphy wrote that the eZ Systems model of open source software backed by vendors is gaining in popularity. Enterprises using the eZ Systems Web CMS can easily approach their digital strategy "at a modest pace" because of their subscription-based pricing model. The Gartner researchers did not issue any cautions over the platform technology itself.
