Special election scheduled to fill seat vacated by death of Rep. Lesley Vance

Gov. Robert Bentley has scheduled dates for a special election for District 80 in the Alabama House of Representatives, a seat vacated by the Nov. 3 death of Rep. Lesley Vance, R-Phenix City.

The district covers portions of Lee County and Russell County.
A special primary, if necessary, will be held on Jan. 19. If a primary runoff is necessary, it will be held March 1.

If no primary runoff is necessary, the special general election will be held April 12. If a primary runoff is necessary, the special general election will be May 10.

The deadline for candidates to qualify with the two major political parties is Nov. 17 at 5 p.m. The parties must certify their qualified candidates to the secretary of state by Nov. 19 at 5 p.m.

For independent candidates and minor party candidates seeking ballot access, the deadline for filing the appropriate notification, petitions, or supporting paperwork with the secretary of state is Jan. 19 at 5 p.m.
