Mauricio Sulaiman, President of the World Boxing Council, says two-time Olympic gold medal winner Guillermo Rigondeaux (15-0, 10KOs) needed a helping hand and his organization was more than willing to reach out.

In the last two weeks, Rigondeaux was stripped of his super bantamweight championships by both the WBO and the WBA. Both sanctioning bodies claimed the boxer was losing his belt due to inactivity.

Rigondeaux was last in action back in December 2014. He returns to action on December 4th in Canada, when he faces Mario Briones of Mexico for a WBC regional belt.

The WBC has ordered a final eliminator between Rigondeaux and Rey Vargas. The winner will become the mandatory challenger to champion Julio Ceja.

"Rigondeaux is a fantastic boxer, a boxer who earned his respect, and with his sacrifices he was able to reach a position that was privileged. He beat Nonito Donaire dramatically, but then his career froze for unexplained reasons. Our obligation as a sanctioning body is always to support those in need," Sulaiman said.

"He is currently not committed to anything so we invited him [to be part of an eliminator]. Before he was champion of other organizations, so there was nothing we could do. We have qualified him for a final eliminator. He and his team have expressed to me, with pride and respect, that he has a dream of becoming champion of the green and gold."

"It's an excellent opportunity to demonstrate that the WBC has their doors open to every boxer. I wish him a lot of luck and we want to see him for a WBC title.
